Having been hurt by the man she thought she was going to marry, Jessie Madsen is understandably hesitant to give her heart away.  While also dealing with her father losing both of his legs in a mining accident years ago, Jessie wants nothing to do with miners or mining.  So when mining geologist James Kelsey comes to town, Jessie wants nothing to do with him.

James quietly and determinedly sets out to do everything he can to help Jessie and her family.  Between money going missing, Jessie’s kidnapping, and Jessie’s stubbornness, the two have a lot to overcome.  But overcoming these obstacles the two do.  I think my favorite part of this book is when the two young men kidnap Jessie believing they are doing the right thing for the right reasons.  Jessie’s ability to forgive them and restore her relationship with God makes this a book worth reading.

So if you like reading historical books or books about forgiveness, check out this book for yourself.  I definitely recommend reading it.

Jessie and James is my first published Western historical novel, and I couldn’t be more excited. The first book I ever wrote was a historical Western, and I’ve been wanting to write another one for ten years. (That first Western is still hanging around my house somewhere. I might decide to publish it next. J) For my research, I traveled to a real mining town about two hours from my house. Yes, it really is named Eureka, and it was a boomtown in the 1880s, the period in which my book is set. I met an old-timer in Eureka who told me some fascinating stories about mining then and now.

Did you know that you may own the ground your house sits on, but you only own it to sixty feet deep? So a mining company can come in and dig a mine right under your house, and it’s perfectly legal. Many mines were dug straight down or in any direction that would get them to ore faster. In the 1880s in Eureka, often they’d dig straight down using only picks, shovels, and dynamite. A plumb bob was utilized to make sure their tunnels were straight up and down. They usually dug down 600 feet then drifted horizontally a couple hundred feet, then dug down again. Some mines went deeper than 1800 feet. Nowadays, there aren’t many mines that deep. They’re more dangerous, so they’re too expensive to insure.

In Jessie and James, James is an ex-cowboy turned geologist looking for gold. Jessie is a feisty, independent woman who runs a boarding house with her parents and thinks Eureka needs a little more fire-and-brimstone preaching to keep the incorrigible miners in line. Jessie doesn’t want anything to do with a gold digger, and she’s willing to use her shotgun to run James off. But James doesn’t scare that easy, especially when the woman on the other end of that shotgun might turn out to be the love of his life.

Jessie and James is full of shotguns, bandits, and heart-stopping romance. Don’t miss it!

As I picked up this book and started reading, I found myself appreciating the ideas of grace, forgiveness, and redemption.  I believe people deserve second chances, and positive results can come from those opportunities.

Ben and Ashley both carry pain and scars from their past, but work to bring glory to God in their present.  Interspersed with the story in the present is a second story about Andrew (Ben’s great-great-grandfather Andrew mixed as well.  I found the author did an excellent job of combining the two stories into one seamless book.

The fact that Ben and Ashley want to rescue horses and use them for an equine-therapy center to bring healing adds to the story as well.  I believe that horses can bring healing.  I found the idea of broken horses helping broken people to be a worthwhile idea.

There is talk about animal abuse, but it is handled in a stirring and compelling manner.  So check out this book for yourself.

I have a wonderful home office with a large screen iMac and the perfect place to keep important papers and reminders right in front of me for easy access. There is also a bed for my dog, Boo, because no office is complete without a bed to welcome the dog. Right?

I also do a lot of writing while seated in a big easy chair in the living room. It all depends upon my mood and how many reference books I might need at the time.

My office usually looks neat when I begin a book. By the time I’m writing the end, the room has become a disaster—stacks of papers demanding my attention and a layer of dust are the most obvious issues.

My office also serves as my art studio (where I do decorative planning and Bible art journaling), so every inch that isn’t taken up by writing related items is filled with art related ones—paints, washi tape, stickers, pens galore, etc.

An early riser naturally, I consider sleeping in to be anything after 6 AM. On a normal writing day, I try to get in half an hour on the treadmill first thing in the morning (and often return to it for ten minutes segments a couple other times during the day). Then I sit at my desk or in my easy chair to do my Bible study. And finally I begin writing.

I can usually create new words for about four hours or so a day. The rest of the work day is filled with editing, revising, research, and correspondence with publisher, agent, readers, and other writers. I have an active online presence which needs attention daily, as well.

I am also a late-in-life part time college student, taking my classes online, so at least a couple of days a week, you’ll find me doing assignments and taking quizzes. For some reason, I rarely use my office for that. The kitchen table seems to suit me better. Probably because it is a large table and I can really spread out.

I feel very blessed to be able to work at home. I had a full time job when I wrote my first book. In fact, I wrote nine novels over the course of nine years while still working full time. The month my ninth book released, I quit my job in order to write full time. Seventy books and almost 28 years later, I’m still at it. As I said, I am blessed.

Living in Texas during the summer means dealing with hot weather!  So reading a Christmas book that includes mentions of snow and Gatlinburg, Tennessee provides the perfect escape.  For two years, I attended college at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.  One of our favorite day trips was to Gatlinburg.  So I loved the primary setting of this story.

Starla, a Christian singer superstar, feels the need to escape from the stress of performing and more.  However, her manager (caring on the surface) wants Starla to keep performing and more.  From the beginning, I knew I did not like the manager.

However, when Starla meets the star of a Christian Rock Band, the two instantly connect.  The scenery in the story is described in breathtaking detail.  Having been to Gatlinburg myself, I felt like I was back there through the pages of this book.

The characters are well-developed as is the storyline.  This book is the perfect summertime read to escape the heat or the perfect book to read during the Christmas holiday season.  So check it out for yourself.

Carol E. Keen enjoys fresh coffee, hot tea, and a good book. She was published for several years in FAMA magazine (Freshwater And Marine Aquarium) as a contributing editor. She published her first book on CD, called Simply Seahorses.

She is the author of The Beauty Series and The Corandira Station, to name a few of her works. She currently resides in the South with her husband and family and spends her time writing, reading, working in photography, and being with her much loved critters.

This book started off in an anthology and now is its own ebook. Christmas and romance go well together, and so I set forth to create a book that could meet that challenge. When I started thinking about writing this, it made me want to use one of my favorite locations as the main setting for this book. When you read it, I hope you will feel like you had a mini-trip to that area. (It’s beautiful there!) I also wanted to include writing about things that I’m very involved in or know a great deal about. Music is one of those things. I hope you enjoy Starla and Mason’s story and the things that God brought about in their lives in this book.

Act of Valor is full of suspense, danger, and relationships.  It is truly a book worth reading. When Violet notices some suspicious activity at the airport she works in, she finds herself in danger of being killed.  Zach Jameson, a childhood friend of Violet, rushes in with his K-9 partner to try and save her life. As the story moves along, Violet continues to be in danger while becoming more than friends with Zach, as well as in danger of losing her life. 

Violet demonstrates a tremendous amount of faith and courage, and faith is something Zach desperately needs after his brother had been killed.  Having not read the first story in this series, I can say there was quite a bit I missed. Can Zach’s relationship with God be restored? Can Zach and Violet find a way to build their relationship into more than friendship?  So I definitely recommend reading this first book in this series before reading this book.

Cops and killers and beagles, oh my! It was a ton of fun writing the second book in the new True Blue K-9 Continuity series. First of all, I had the honor of working with some AMAZING authors. (It’s challenging creating a world together and keeping all those details straight!) I had the privilege of following the amazing Lynette Eason, so that’s always a plus! Second, I learned all about the astonishing world of beagles!  Those critters are just amazing. For instance, the original beagles were tiny, only 8 inches tall and could be carried in a pocket, which is why they called them Pocket Beagles. I need one of those! The name beagle comes from the French, which is translated “wide throat” or “loudmouth.” This is well earned by Eddie in my story, who will occasionally let loose with the trademark baying. The beagles small size, general friendliness, and ferocious scent drive, make it the perfect dog to sniff around airports and get into compact spaces. Eddie enjoys doing just that with Zach, his handler and best friend. He earns those gourmet treats that Zach bakes up for him. Best of all, Eddie was rescued from death before he became a canine cop star! It’s just awesome when you can twine fact with fiction to come up with a tail wagging suspense story! I hope you enjoy the second installment in the series!

Moments to Forget resonated with me because as a younger sister who had a stormy relationship with my older sister I could relate to what the Thatcher sisters were enduring. These sisters endure quite a bit of tension and dissension among themselves.  Jillian serves as the mediator between her surviving sisters Johanna and Payton.  The death of Payton’s twin Piper creates a certain amount of heartbreak for the sisters. Between cancer, losing her job because of the effects of cancer, house renovations that go awry and more, Jillian has too much to deal with in her life.

The characters pull the reader into the story.  The storyline is believable.  Jillian and her sisters portray strength and dedication.  The home improvement storyline adds a certain amount of humor to the storyline and reminds me of the movie The Money Pit.  So check out this book for yourself.

I’m launching Moments We Forget, book two in the Thatcher Sisters series, and I’ve just turned in the final book in the series. I’d love to share book three’s title with you, but I don’t know what it is. (Of course, book three might have a final title by the time you read this—that’s part of the fun of prerelease deadlines.)

One thing I do know: the theme of “Little Women gone wrong” is woven through all of the books . . . thanks to the Thatcher sisters: Payton, Pepper, Jillian, and Johanna.

Sisters, be they real or imaginary, can be complicated.

Of course, there are sisters who have close relationships. They “get” each other and love doing life together.

But then there are the sister relationships that are like mismatched socks. Or those expensive jeans you loved in the store, but when you bring them home, they never quite live up to those moments in the dressing room.

Such are the Thatcher sisters. Johanna, Jillian, Payton, and Pepper grew up in the same family. They’re all tall. They love Broncos football and board games. This Daring Journey is the sixth book in the Heart of the Mountains series by Misty M. Beller.  Just like the other books in this series, this book contains danger, adventure, compassion, and eventually love.  Samuel Grant was sent to retrieve Henry Clark for Henry’s sister’s wedding, only Samuel arrives to find Henry’s wife/widow dealing with a potentially dangerous situation.  He comes to her aid and when he realizes Henry is dead,  he offers to take Moriah Clark and her three-week-old baby to Moriah’s family.

From the moment I started reading this book, I could not put it down.  Just like the other books in this series, the characters captured my heart and my imagination.  If you have not read the other books in this series, I urge you to read them first, so you have a full understanding of the story.

About the Author

Misty M. Beller writes romantic mountain stories, set on the 1800s frontier and woven with the truth of God’s love.

She was raised on a farm in South Carolina, so her Southern roots run deep. Growing up, her family was close, and they continue to keep that priority today. Her husband and children now add another dimension to her life, keeping her both grounded and crazy.

God has placed a desire in Misty’s heart to combine her love for Christian fiction and the simpler ranch life, writing historical novels that display God’s abundant love through the twists and turns in the lives of her characters

How did I get started writing?

I’ve always loved to read, but several years ago I was putting together my bucket list, and realized that I really did want to write a novel. So, “Write a novel that’s published” made it near the top!

I decided, it’s now or never, and made the commitment to do it. So, I had a general idea that I wanted it to be a Christian historical western romance. But where to start? I finally decided I needed to find a good book to help me plan. I stumbled upon (a.k.a. God led me to) the best possible book to help me get started with a great plan: Plot and Structure by James Scott Bell. For all you writers out there, I can’t recommend it highly enough!

From there, I’ve soaked in every bit of writing instruction I can from some amazing groups and individuals. And I’ve spent countless hours sitting with my laptop pouring out words onto the screen. Writing is in my blood. It’s my passion. A true gift from my Heavenly Father, and I pray daily that he uses the words for His purpose.
