Have you ever thought you were in love with someone only to find out he or she was not who you thought he or she was?  Priscilla believed Matthew was the man she would marry.  Only he betrays her in the worst possible way, and it leaves her life in shambles.  However, sometimes when things look the darkest, God lets true light shine in on us.

Gabriel Kaufman has come to Priscilla’s community to open a camel milk farm.  I love his nephew Timothy and the wonderful way Timothy helps his uncle.  When an Englischer and his wife become determined to buy the farm, Gabriel finds himself in a fight for his very livelihood.  I have known people who find it difficult to speak in public, so I could appreciate Gabriel’s difficulty and fear of speaking in front of large groups of people. I also appreciate how Priscila steps in to help Gabriel.

One thing I found very believable in this story was how some people in Priscilla’s community were quick to believe Priscilla’s innocence, while others were quick to offer judgment against her.

This book shows how the Amish can work together with Englischers to benefit everyone. Alyssa is a reporter who comes to do a story on the camel farm but winds up finding her faith in God restored as well as helping to save the farm.  Her willingness to listen made me respect her.

So if you like Amish stories that illustrate forgiveness, faith, family, and love, check out this book for yourself.  It truly shows how sometimes you can find the one God intended for you without even trying.

A few years ago, I passed Amish camel farm in Bird-in-Hand, PA. As an author, seeing anything new or different always piques my interest, so I went for a visit. Not only did I explore the farm and store, I bought camel’s milk to drink. I think it’s important to do in-depth research for the settings and information I include in my Amish novels.

 

I was fascinated to discover camels usually bond to one milker, only give a little milk each day, and are extremely expensive to buy. All of those are reasons why camel’s milk is so expensive. It costs $15 for a pint. Much pricier than cow’s milk.

 

And if you’re wondering how camel’s milk tastes, the best way I can think of to describe it is a slightly salty version of powdered milk. It’s more watery than cow’s milk.

 

Because I grew up drinking powdered milk during my early childhood years when we lived in Africa, I’d always vowed never again to drink it once we moved back to the United States. A vow I’ve kept. That was never a problem living in Pennsylvania, where there’s plenty of farmland, cow, and Amish, of course.

 

The camel’s milk was enough like powdered milk to make me gag. But because I want to be sure my books are authentic, I drank it. So, readers, now you know how much a I care about you.

 

My concern for you also extends to more than just getting factual information correct. I pray for each and every one of you as I write my stories. I hope that they will touch your heart and bring you closer to God.

Love’s Truest Hope is a wonderful collection of stories that touch on such topics such as forgiveness, second chances, loss, love, and more.  Each story included in this book stands alone and the authors do a wonderful job of telling stories that capture the reader’s imagination and hearts.

Mission of Love, the first story in the collection, tells of an Amish man who is called on to minister to inner-city youth.  Cindy is called to step out of her comfort zone and minister with him.  On the other hand, Cindy’s sister is someone I wanted to find some common sense.  I do have to say this story ended more abruptly than I would have liked it to end.

Plain Redemption details the story of a widow who lost a husband and a year ago, and then lost her unborn child.  Now Lyddie’s father-in-law has been injured in an accident that they discover was not necessarily an accident.  Thomas, Lyddie’s brother-in-law, returns and the two begin to rediscover their feelings for one another while dealing with danger and more. This story is fast-paced and kept my interest.  Of the three stories, I felt like this story came to the most complete conclusion.

The final story, Bid for Love, chronicles the journey of a young Amish man who embarks on a journey to assist a young woman and her grandmother after the grandmother wins the bid for yardwork from Marty and his friends.  Olivia moves in with Marty and his family and learns about the Amish lifestyle.  Once again, I wish there was more to this story.  I felt like so much more needed to be told.

So if you want to read an Amish story that does not necessarily look like typical Amish stories, check out this book for yourself.

I have always loved reading Amish fiction and since our family spent several years living in an area with an Amish community that appreciation for these stories has grown.  So when I received the opportunity to review this book, I was happy to have this opportunity.  Grace Fisher and her children have endured a lot at the hands of her husband and their father.  They fear him with good reason.  But when he dies unexpectedly, Grace and the children face new challenges and opportunities.

Elijah, a confirmed bachelor, and basic recluse, finds himself helping Grace and her children since he lives next door to them.  From the moment he enters the house to help when Melvin apparently falls, he makes what could be normal assumptions about their circumstances.  My heart broke from the fear and trials Grace and her two children endured.

I wanted Elijah and Grace to move past their heart-breaks and find what love should truly be.  The story kept my interest and Grace’s determination to provide for her family inspired me.  Elijah deserved to find love and happiness.  The relationships that developed between him, Libby (Grace’s daughter) and Levi (Grace’s son) brought the story to life.

So if you want to read a book that includes a mother’s love, family relationships, and second chances, check out this book for yourself.

The story idea for The Amish Widow’s Secret came to me after I’d just finished reading stories to my Amish friend’s children to give her a little break. She was expecting a new baby, and while we sat in their kitchen enjoying a snack, her husband came in.

The tenderness in his eyes as they talked made my eyes well with tears. It was obvious how much they loved each other, and they both supported each other. A perfect companionship. Not everyone gets to experience that bond, that caring.

It made me wonder what she’d do without him, and the seeds of a story was born. I decided to explore how a widow would cope with a pregnancy and two children alone. In the Amish community, of course, no one is ever left on their own. Everyone chips in to help.

So, what if the handsome and reclusive bachelor next door felt obligated to help, but wanted to avoid getting involved? Would he eventually soften his heart toward children and love?

As I wrote, I wondered if Elijah Beiler could get over a previous heartbreak. He needed to face his past before he moved forward, so I gave him that opportunity. A surprise visit and unwelcome news force Elijah to rethink everything he believes about parenting and love. And about the person who destroyed his world. He also needs to face the bitterness he’s been harboring.

Sometimes learning more about the circumstances or reasons of the person who has hurt us causes us to see the whole situation in a new light, making it easier to let go of the hurt. That’s what happens to Elijah.

I hope his journey will encourage readers to consider the places in their lives where they’ve been holding onto pain and reevaluate those experiences in the light of God’s forgiveness and love. To write this story, I needed to do that too.

Mending Fences by Suzanne Woods Fisher is the first story in The Decon’s Family series.   I can not remember reading any other stories that have connections with this story, but still found myself able to follow it.  However, I do plan on reading other books with connections to this story.  As someone who loves reading Amish fiction, I found this story kept me reading and wanting to learn more about Luke and Izzy.

Luke Shrock did not necessarily plan on returning home, and I am sure he never imagined having to go to those he had pulled what he believed were pranks.  However, he found himself in exactly that situation.  He comes to live at Windmill Farms under two conditions:  the first is that he makes a sincere apology and the second is he has to listen to his victims describe the results of his actions.  As he started speaking to his victims, he learned how much actions have long-lasting consequences.  It truly is a learning experience for Luke. He also kept finding that his list kept growing.  I can not imagine going through his experiences. He must prove to his community he has changed.

Izzy Miller is another boarder at Windmill Farms and Luke tries to befriend her.  However,  his attempts only annoy and bother her.  He sets out to impress her by finding her mother.  I found this to be a wonderful attempt at proving who Luke wants to become.

The characters are well-developed and interact in a meaningful way.  The descriptions of the scenery are incredible.  This is definitely a book worth reading.  So check it out for yourself.

A Friend in Need

Luke Schrock was nearly friendless. He returned to Stoney Ridge in Mending Fences after a stint in rehab only because his bishop, David Stoltzfus, strongly encouraged him. And everybody knows you didn’t say no to your bishop.

But nobody else in town wanted anything to do with Luke. They forgave him for the trouble he’d caused in his last downward spiral, the one that went too far. The one that even scared Luke. Forgiving him was the easy part. The Amish of Stoney Ridge were intentional forgivers. It was their trust—that’s what he would have to earn. Trust was a fragile thing. I love reading Amish Fiction, especially since we spent several years living in central Pennsylvania, where we frequently saw Amish families and even went to local Amish farms and an Amish store to buy produce and goods.  Moreover, I love reading books by Molly Jebber.  So when the opportunity came up to review Ellie’s Redemption, I was thrilled to read it.  This is the second book in the series, An Amish Charm Bakery series.

Ellie’s Redemption is the story of an Amish young lady who made some poor choices after her mother died.  These choices followed her, even after she repented and returned to the Amish community.

Joel Wenger is an Amish man who wants to believe Ellie has changed.  But his parents and others in the community make that difficult to do.  Of course, his family had experienced first hand the tragedy of having his sister walk away from the Amish way of life.  So it is somewhat understandable how they felt.

This book will take you through a variety of emotions, feelings, and thoughts.  It kept my interest from start to finish.  So if you want to read a wonderful, uplifting, and inspiring book, check this out for yourself.

Here’s one just for you!

Ellie’s Surprise Cookies

1 cup shortening 2 cups rolled oats (quick cook)

1 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon soda

1 ¼ cup brown sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla

¼ teaspoon cinnamon 1 ½ cups chocolate chips

2 eggs 2 cups flour

3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt

Sift dry ingredients. Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat until fluffy. Stir in dry ingredients. Add oatmeal, vanilla and chocolate chips. Dough will be crumbly. Spoon a teaspoon of dough at a time on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

About the Author

Diane grew up on a farm outside Findlay, Ohio, and she often acted out characters from her own stories in the backyard. In high school Diane would read during classes and hide a novel in front of her in a propped-up textbook. After her high school graduation, she attended Ohio State University. Then Diane became a schoolteacher and play director. She met her husband while teaching at an orphanage, and they married three years later. It took her that long to convince him she was the one for him! While raising their family in southwestern Ohio, Diane started writing nonfiction and was published. Later she decided it would be a nice escape to write fiction. Diane was blessed with five daughters and one son. Two daughters were born with Down syndrome and live with Diane and her husband. Their other children live close by in Ohio so that’s wonderful. They also have four precious grandchildren. Diane published through a variety of houses. Several years ago, she decided to self-publish her books, so requested the rights back to her previously published stories. From the beginning, she enjoyed self-publishing her Amish romances. Hello, Reader Friends,

Priscilla’s Escape is Book 3 in The Bishop’s Daughters Series. This story features Priscilla King, and she is the fourth child born to Amos and Lillian King. You may remember meeting Priscilla in my Dreams of Plain Daughters Series. After I finished writing this series, I decided to continue to write about the Amish and English characters living in Fields Corner, Ohio. They became family and real to me.

The King family have six children with only one son. That is like our Craver family because we have five daughters and one son. Through the years, our family has faced certain challenges with two daughters being born with Down syndrome. Although Priscilla doesn’t have any siblings with special needs, she feels overlooked in her family. It’s like she’s invisible to her parents, especially to her father. He doesn’t understand her passion for painting but favors Molly’s talent for quilting. Everyone needs a cheerleader in their corner at times, and Priscilla is no different. Fortunately, her new boyfriend, Stephen, listens to her dream to paint beach pictures. He even understands her desire to wait to join the church.

All families suffer some type of hardships. It does seem like some more than others. A family’s faith in God gives them hope in their daily lives. Whatever the level of the pain, staying close to God and listening to his voice, gives us the strength to survive. The King family have their share of tragedies, but their faith reminds steadfast. When Priscilla leaves their close-knit unit, they all reach out to her by letter and phone calls. Her siblings even tell their father that he needs to share his secret with Priscilla.

I hope you will enjoy reading Priscilla’s Escape. There is a lot happening in the King family, so you can catch up with your favorite romantic couples in this novel. If you love going to the beach as much as I do, I think you’ll love reading about Priscilla’s beach experiences – some are good, and others are not.

My Thoughts on this book:

Our family lived for four years in a community that included many Amish families.   We began buying our produce from several Amish markets, one thing that always stood out to me was the respect the children had for their parents.  So when Priscilla King goes against her parents’ wishes to take a job in Florida, I was surprised.  While the concept of the running around time or rumspringa is familiar to me, the idea of an Amish young man or woman going against their parents’ wishes is unsual.  However, I understand Priscilla’s reasons for doing so.

Amos King, Priscilla’s father, is the Bishop and has a secret.  I love how his wife gently tries to get him to share the secret with his family.  For me this book is as much about the extended family as it is about Priscilla, Mitch and Stephen.

This is the third book in The Bishop’s Daughters series and even though I have not read the first two books, I feel like this book is able to stand alone.  So I recommend you check out this book for yourself.
