If you need to brush up on your Math skills, I recommend checking out Math Refresher for Adults from Math Essentials. Our second son is 21-years-old, and when he graduated from high school, he was not certain of what he wanted to do for a career.  Since we knew we would be moving again, he decided to take some time deciding what he wanted to do.  Now we have moved and he has decided he wants to get a culinary degree.  So when we had the opportunity to review the Math Refresher for Adults book, I knew it would be perfect for our son to get some practice on his math skills.

Perhaps because I was a high school math teacher in the past, I can appreciate Rick Fisher’s desire to develop unique math materials that allow students to achieve success. As a public school teacher for over 31 years, Rick Fisher has the ability and experience to achieve this objective.

Table of Contents Pages

Math Refresher for Adults provides the perfect platform for those who may have a math phobia, those who want to help their children with their homework, for those returning to college, for those applying for a job that requires passing a math competency test, those preparing for the GED, SAT or other standardized tests and more.

This book includes basic math, geometry, problem-solving, Pre-Algebra and Algebra, A Math Resource section, access to free video tutorials for each topic, and more.  Our son who is using this book has strived for getting perfect scores for each lesson.  So he goes through a lesson, checks his answers, and then goes back through those questions he had problems with until he gets them right.  Sometimes that means he just needs to rework the problem while other times he has to work backward from the answer to see what he did wrong.

Completed Pages

Our son is working straight through the book, however, it can be used in whatever manner suits the student.  For example, if a student only needs to brush up on certain skills or topics they can jump directly to that topic.

So far he has done about 40 pages in the workbook, including some tests.  He is pleased with his progress so far.  He seems to believe he is demonstrating how much difference a few years has made in his ability to understand and complete math sheets now versus several years ago.  I believe part of this rests on the fact he is self-motivated to complete the work.  Plus, he has set the standards he wants to achieve himself.

Here are some pages our son has completed:

As someone who loves math, I appreciate the books from Math Essentials because I have children who do not share my passion for math.  Math Essentials provides materials that allow my children to achieve success in math.

In 2018, our family reviewed this same book, and you can read that review here. Review of Math Refresher for Adults from Math Essentials

If you need to brush up on your Math skills, I recommend checking out Math Refresher for Adults from Math Essentials.  Math is one of those skills that you either use or you are bound to lose the skills you have learned.  As the mother of four and with two teenagers we are still homeschooling currently, I know I need to keep up with my math skills.  So when the opportunity to participate in this review came up, I was thrilled for the opportunity.

This is the second product we have reviewed for Math Essentials, and I expected to be impressed.  The company designs products to be used for home or school.  This is a perfect book for adults who want to brush up on their math skills, prepare for any type of test involving math skills, or anyone else who needs a refresher.  For example, college bound students or those going back to school after an absence may find this book useful.

This book works for those with a math phobia, those who have forgotten the math they have learned, those who want to help their children with homework, those re-entering the work-force, those needing to take placement tests (such as for entering college after an absence from school), those needing to improve their math skills and others with similar goals, objectives and needs.

The book includes whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, integers, charts and graphs, word problems, along with pre-algebra algebra topics such as expnents, square roots, order of operations, properties of numbers, scientific notation, ratios and proportions, number lines, the coordinate plane, graphing equations and more.  Here is some pictures of the table of contents:

The wonderful thing about Math Refresher for Adults is that the learner can use it any way necssary.  For example, I started at the beginning and am working my way straight through the lessons.  On the other hand, if a student just needs to brush up on certain skills, it allows him or her to just work on those particular subjects.

While this is not meant to be used as a consumable workbook, I did much of the work in directly in the book for the first part of the problems.  For the bottom section of the book, I used notebook paper to do the work.  Having been a math teacher many years ago, I always required my students to show their work.  I can not and will not expect less from myself.  Here are some of the pages I did.

All-in-all, I have to say I really enjoyed this product.  I felt it did an excellent job of reviewing the necessary math skills an adult should know.  I was very pleased with the order of the topics and the amount of problems in each assignment.  I like that I can jump around if needed rather than having to work straight through the book.  My husband plans on using the book to brush up on his math skills as well.

Review of Math Essentials’ No-Nonsense Algebra

Homeschool math at the high school level can be intimidating so I’d like to introduce you to No-Nonsense Algebra from Math Essentials.  Finding a math program that our 14-year-old daughter likes and understands can be challenging.  But with the included videos for the lessons taught by Richard W. Fisher, our daughter has found this program to be understandable.

Our daughter is our 4th and last child and she is definitely more gifted in the area of art than math.  So we have tried a variety of math programs through the years. Like most parents, we have found some work and some do not.  So when I saw the chance for our family to review No-Nonsense Algebra, I was glad to get it for our daughter.

This is a soft cover book that is meant to be used as a textbook, and the students need to do their work in a notebook.  Since it is not consumable, it would work well for families with more than one child.  As I have already stated, our daughter is not a math whiz kid.  She loves art a lot more.  So in her own words, she stated, “Some of the instructions and problems are worded in ‘mathease’, which is a language our daughter feels she does not speak.  However, the videos provided our daughter with clear and concise instructions that made the lessons understandable for her.

I feel like the videos are well-executed, easy to hear and easy to understand.  The instructions really helped our daughter.  This course covers everything from integers to the quadratic equation along with everything in between.

I felt like the lessons were reasonable in the material being covered, the examples that were given and the number of practice problems.  Each lesson contains an introduction which includes helpful hints, example problems worked out showing each step for solving the problem, exercises, and several review questions.

Since I have taught high school math and realize how it builds upon itself, I love the review problems.  It helps to ensure the students remember past materials.  I also loved the fact the book starts off with problems involving integers.  This is a necessary skill for solving most algebraic problems.  If a student can not solve problems with integers properly, he or she will probably have extreme difficulty later in Algebra.  Also, from my experience in teaching Algebra, the majority of mistakes in Algebra are caused by mathematical computations.  So ensuring students have a firm grasp on working with integers will help with their success.  The pictures below show two days of my daughter’s work and answers.  As I have stated, she is very artistic so her pages have to include some drawings.

I feel this book is perfect for a variety of situations.  It is perfect as a stand-alone textbook for Algebra.  It is also perfect for a student who just wants to brush up on certain skills.  It also would be perfect for a student just wanting to review Algebra for any reason. I also like the fact Math Essentials offers a variety of other products ranging from materials for 4th/5th grade all the way through this Algebra course.

I was very pleased with this book and the videos are provided with it.  This course is definitely worth taking a look at in my opinion.  If you would like to read more reviews about No-Nonsense Algebra from Math Essentials, click here or on the graphic below.
