Review of Library and Educational Services LLC

review of library and educational services llc

library-and-educational-services-logo

One of our goals, when we started homeschooling, was to build a library and with Library and Educational Services LLC we can add beautiful Reinforced Hardcover Library Binding Nonfiction books. They also carry paperbacks like the Who Was . . . series with titles like Who Was Leonarado da Vinci?  In addition to books Library and Educational Services, LLC also carries CDs such as the Lifehouse Theater Pride & Prejudice CD.  If your family is in the market for wholesale books, you should definitely check out this company for yourself.

img_4038

In the past when our children were younger, we owned several of the “Who Was…” books.  So I basically knew what to expect.  I was interested in receiving the book on Leonardo da Vinci since I found myself desiring to explore art, artists, and artistic pursuits this year.  One of my favorite parts of these books is the illustrations that can be found throughout the book.  I appreciated how this book addressed how Leonardo was an artist, but also a scientist, an athlete, and a musician.  This series is recommended for ages 8 to 12, and my children have found the books in this collection interesting to read. The books talk about the individual when they were a child to when they died.

img_4042

I love having audio dramas to listen to either at home or for when we are traveling.  Because our local homeschool dram group performed a version of Jane Eyre two years ago, I thought Pride and Prejudice would be a great audio drama to add to our collection.  I have to say this drama did not disappoint our family.  The sound quality, voice actors and actresses along with the background music made it worth listening to for our family.  The entire audio took about 70 minutes to listen to and I found it kept true to the story.  It was entirely appropriate for younger listeners as well as older listeners.  I can say our family will definitely be investing in more audio dramas from Library and Educational Services LLC in the future.

img_4001

I freely admit I am a bookaholic, So any company that I get incredible books from pleases me.  More importantly, for my husband to enjoy and actually read the books brings me joy.  For our selection of Reinforced Hardcover Library Binding Nonfiction books, I elected for our family to receive, the Signature Lives Set 2.  This collection includes 13 individuals including Booker T. Washington, Clara Barton, Benedict Arnold, Abigail Adams, Thomas Edison, Thurgood Marshall, William Penn and more. Recommended for ages 9 to 16, these stories help students discover the significance of these individuals.  The books feature illustrations, maps, sidebars, actual first-person accounts, quotes, historical photographs and more.

img_4014

I love how these books look on our bookshelf.  More importantly, I love how my husband could not put these books down. I was excited when my husband began reading the books the first night.  Normally, I talk about my children’s interactions with the products we review, but for these books, I desire to concentrate on my husband.  My husband is not necessarily what I would call an avid reader.  However, he actually read at least 2 or 3 books a night and enjoyed them.  So while these books may be recommended for ages 9 to 16, adults will definitely enjoy them as well. He found the books to be interesting and worth reading.

Here is a picture of him reading and then some collages of pages from the books he read.

Review of Home School in the Woods’ Timeline Collection: A Collection of Historical Timeline Figures

hsitw-logo-website_360x-1

We love using the Timeline Collection: A Collection of Historical Timeline Figures from Home School in the Woods for more than just our history timeline!  As a homeschooling parent, some companies provide such incredible products that I love going back when I need to find additional resources.  When I am looking for history lapbooks, hands-on history notebooking pages, and more, my first instinct is to go to Home School in the Woods.  So when I had the opportunity for our family to review the timeline collection from Home School in the Woods, I was thrilled.  For this review, we received the downloadable version of this product.  However, it is also available on CD.

Home School in the Woods provides a large variety of products to suit children of all ages. From timelines to U.S. History Studies to World History Studies, to games, to hands-on activities, and more Home School in the Woods has items to please everyone. Click here to read an article from Amy Pak’s blog about using timelines in your homeschool.  Or if you want to read an article about how to add sanity to your school year, click here.

When I received the Timeline Collection: A Collection of Historical Figures, I knew our family would find many ways to use this hands-on resource.  This resource is one resource that everyone in your family can use.  When I received the file to download, the first thing that is important to remember is that it is a zip file, so it is necessary to extract the files first.

img_3991

Once the files are extracted, you can pick and choose what time period you need, what size figures you want, and exactly what pages you need to print at a time.  Another great thing about these figures is that the figures can be used no matter what history resource or curriculum you are using.  Once you have selected a page, you can print it out and then use the figures in whatever way suits your family.  Also, you can print only the pages you need for a given year, semester, quarter, month, or even week to make life manageable.  Personally, I like the idea of printing the pages out by the week to ensure we do not misplace any.

I found it interesting that depending on where you choose to print from, the files printed slightly differently.  In the picture below on the left-hand side, I elected to print from the index page, which when clicked on opens the index in a browser window.  It seems to be slightly larger than when I selected to print from the actual file on my computer.  I am not sure why this is the case, but I just found it interesting.

img_3978

I appreciate the fact there is an option to either print the figures with additional text or without the additional text.  For younger children, I think printing the ones without additional information would be better.  But for older children and teenagers, I think the ones with text allow for conversations to begin.

img_3994

I  love the idea of using the figures to create a self-directed high school history course.  I could easily see giving our 16-year-old daughter free rein to pick and choose what historical figures to study and then allowing her to find resources to utilize for studying those figures.  Whether your family is studying Ancient History, World History, or American History, you will find figures you can use.  Because we are doing this review during the summer, I decided to change things up some and let her start from the most recent figure and start working our way back.  Basically, I had her work three days a week.  I asked her to place half of a page each day. Here are some sample pages.

img_3995

One of the most helpful things I found about this program is the Index that allowed me to quickly search for anything I might want or need.  When you select the file labeled Index, a window will open in your browser that looks like the bottom of the picture below, then you can select what you want to print.

img_3992

I also found it helpful how the files are broken down into sections including Creation to Christ, Napoleon to Now (World History), Resurrection to Revolution (World History), and America.  So if you are concentrating on a particular time in history, this feature allows you to quickly navigate to the figures you need.

You can Find Home School in the Woods on Social media on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Review of Simply Music’s Music & Creativity – Foundation Course

music-and-creativity-program-logo

simply-music-logo

If you have thought about piano lessons for yourself or your children but are unsure if it would be worth the time and investment you’ll want to check out the Music & Creativity – Foundation Course from Simply Music.  For this program, your family will need a piano or a keyboard with at least 49 keys, a printer to print out the resources, and optionally 2 sets of headphones along with a tablet or phone.

When I was a child, my parents initially signed my sister and I up for piano lessons.  However, in the way many things for children go, I was allowed to quit.  Now as an adult, I regret quitting.  So when I saw the opportunity to review this program, I was excited.  This was not going to be a program for my children to review (my only son who wants piano lessons was already taking lessons from an in-person instructor this summer.

This online piano program includes online piano lessons, printable resources including a keyboard you can print out for when your student needs to practice either when you are on the go or do not want to disturb other members of your household, downloads of the soundtracks for the musical selections, a resource notebook, and a printable version of Music and the Art of Long-Term Relationships.

img_3809

Simply Music provides online piano lessons to students in the comfort of their own home.  According to a quote on the website, “From his earliest years, Neil Moore, the Founder of Simply Music and creator of the Simply Music Piano Program, heard music and pictured it in his mind in terms of shapes and patterns. This relationship to music became the basis of his entire approach to learning and playing the piano.”  This relationship with music provides a dramatic contrast to the way many piano instructors approach their lessons.

As a busy homeschooling mom and blogger, I love the convenience of being able to learn the piano on my own time in my own home.  This program encourages the students to go at their own pace rather than rushing through the material.  From watching the videos, I can tell that Neil Moore, the founder of Simply Music, genuinely cares about his students and loves what he is doing.

img_3879

For this review, I used a tablet for watching the lessons and listening to the soundtracks.  I plugged a set of earbuds into my tablet to hear the lessons and soundtracks.  Then I plugged in a set of headphones into the jack on our 61-key keyboard.  This allowed me to hear both what I was playing on the keyboard and what was being said or played in the lessons.

The program starts out allowing the students and their families to either dive right into a section where they play actual music or you have the option to go right to the lessons.  I elected to go straight to the lessons. I love how easy the screen is to navigate.  Once logged in, I had the option of what course to select.  Then I had the option to print out and download the additional files necessary for completing the course.  Once that was done, I was able to dive right into the lessons.

766eb8cf-298d-4254-bc3f-58d63a112261-6436-0000019f999d5aca_file

Mr. Moore starts off by providing basic information about the keys on a keyboard and basic information necessary to play.  Then he moves on to discussing proper techniques and more.  I happened to be watching some of the videos going about the background information in our bedroom, and my husband wound up watching with me.  We both found the approach Mr. Moore uses to be easy to understand and learn from.

I was able to quickly and easily navigate to the page to sign up for the course online.  Once signed up, I was able to easily sign in and begin the program.  In this program, the emphasis appears to be going slowly to ensure learning is done properly.  I loved how the lessons were broken down into manageable sections.  Although for younger children or those with no background in music, more time may need to be devoted to the first lesson to ensure mastery.

img_3880

I feel mastery is necessary for this program.  So during the review period, I gave myself the grace to do exactly that – master a lesson before moving on to the next section.  So during this review, I only made it into the 3rd lesson.  Right now, I am trying to master the first part of this lesson, which has me working with my right hand.  Because I feel comfortable taking my time, I feel confident I will be able to master this piece. Here is a video of me practicing part of the first song in the third lesson.

One of my favorite parts of the program is the music selections.  The arrangements have a richness and depth to them.  The soundtracks are available as piano solos, vocal accompaniments, accompaniments, as well as improvisations,   The quality of these soundtracks are amazing.  Ode to Joy and Amazing are two of the selections, which are two of my favorite pieces of music.  While some of the other pieces I am not familiar with, having listened to the soundtrack, I look forward to playing them in the future.

img_3838

In addition to the actual piano lessons, I received a PDF copy of Music and the Art of Long-Term Relationships  I found this book to be one that spoke to my soul.  In junior high and high school I played in the band and also sang in the choir.  So music has been a part of my life.  Our children have been brought up singing in church.  Then they picked up musical instruments.  Our children tend to be self-motivated for the most part. This book delves into the need for parents to play an active role in their children’s musical endeavors.

img_3881

I recognized the importance of having a personal relationship with music, both for myself and for our children.  The idea of using music as a form of self-expression causes me to recognize the importance of this statement.  For our family personally, musical expression is a way for us to praise, honor, and worship God.  I love the idea of being able to sit down at a piano or keyboard at any time in order to worship God.  I love how the book emphasizes the idea of having a lifelong relationship with music versus allowing students to just quit.  I also appreciate how it talks about the highs and lows that will come with learning music, but recognizing also those highs and lows will be temporary.  This book is one I definitely feel is worth reading and goes hand in hand with the entire philosophy of Simply Music.

I would recommend parents and older students read the book either before beginning the program or shortly after your family begins the program so you understand the basis of the program and what your role as parents should be.  Truly, the term “Life Coach” fits the job we as parents do perfectly.  Because I am the one doing the program in our home, my husband is my “Life Coach”.  He does an excellent job of helping recognize that statuses and feelings change (even when I may not want to accept that fact).

You can find Simply Music on Social Media on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube.
Whether you have a background in music or not (or whether your child has a background in music or not), I feel this program would be a wonderful way of learning to play the piano.
So if your family is interested in online piano lessons from a different perspective, check out Simply Music’s Music & Creativity – Foundation Course for yourself.

Review of The Complete Starter Kit from The Kingdom Code

img_3635
With The Complete Starter Kit from The Kingdom Code, I can teach my daughters money management skills with a Biblical context.  Because I know our daughter has been dreaming of creating her own graphic novels, I recognize she needs to understand about money management and more in order to be prepared to become an entrepreneur.

According to their website, The Complete Starter Kit includes the TextbookStudent Packet, and Teacher’s Guide. These three components are everything needed to teach one student The Kingdom Code curriculum, and the Teacher’s Guide makes teaching easy and fun!”  We also received the JR Budget Kit and The Kingdom Code Coloring Book to review as well.

The Kingdom Code is an elective designed as a 34-week course, (a full year) and ideally should be taught twice weekly for 45 minutes. It is Biblically based and has Bible verses in every lesson.  Parental guidance is definitely required especially for the first eight lessons, which take about a semester while the student is building their business from the ground up.  The students have to choose a mentor, create their business plan, and start their marketing strategies and work towards gaining money.  Lessons 9 – 27 focus on maintaining a ledger, create an income statement, make calls as well as write thank-you notes to customers, and more.

During the course, students examine everything from what The Kingdom code is to Building Treasure, to developing a business plan, to keeping records, to savings, to discovering their gifts, as well as taking charge of their life.  Periodically, they also look back at what they have done and accomplished.  At the stage our daughter is at currently, we wanted her to use this material more to get ideas rather than earning money currently.  She had been working on developing her “world” for her story but realized she needed to start all over in order to be satisfied since she recognizes that having the background world is important.

One of the key steps is finding a mentor, but so far we have been unsuccessful at that because of what she wants to do.  However, as a blogger, I can help with writing.  She has found people online to help with her artwork.  Plus, her father can assist with the business side of things.  So even though she is off to a slow start with her own business, she still is learning a lot from this course.

Because of the type of business our daughter wants to develop, certain things did not apply to her.  We knew from the beginning, she was more likely to find her customers through the Internet rather than phone calls and other traditional means.  Our goal in reviewing this course centered more on understanding money and business management rather than actually rushing to make money.  As parents, my husband and I both recognize the importance of our daughter learning how to create business plans, manage money, and determine how to market her products.

Here is a sample of the type of artwork she might include in her novels.

The Student Textbook is a 244-page spiral-bound book which includes economics, budgeting, historical entrepreneurship, consumer math, Biblical codes, life skills, and practical thinking in order to capture the student’s imaginations.  The lessons include many medieval ideas such as bravery, kindness, honor, integrity, and more.  Our daughter really enjoyed the content and how the lessons were presented.

img_3690

The Student Activity pages are contained in the Student Packet and include consumable worksheets for the students to complete.  Our daughter found these pages interesting and worth completing.

img_3687

Here are some sample activity pages our daughter has completed.

img_3715

The Teacher’s Guide breaks the 27 lessons down into 68 daily plans.  The lesson plans provide step-by-step instructions for the assignments along with providing suggestions and reminders.  The answers to the Activity pages and the worksheets are included as well at the end of each lesson.

img_3686

Our family appreciated how each lesson followed the same format and included Biblical passages.  Our daughter appreciated the details included in each lesson.  My husband and I also appreciated being involved in the lessons with our daughter.  Because my husband ran a business with his father prior to going full-time in the Army Reserves, he was able to offer a lot of insights to our daughter.  Since I have a degree in marketing, I will be able to provide additional insights to our daughter when we reach that stage.

Here are some pages from the coloring book.

img_3714

Here is what the receipt book looks like.

img_3716

As students complete lessons, they place stickers on the map to mark their progress.  Our daughter was not necessarily interested in doing this particular activity.

img_3703

We also received the JR KCK Budget kit as well.  This kit is designed for children who are too young to complete The Kingdom Code.  It is a great way to introduce younger children to the idea of money management.  Because we have some friends with children who could benefit from this, I plan on sharing it with them.  It includes stickers, coloring pages and more.  Here is a photograph of some of the pages.

In addition to money management and entrepreneur skills, the lessons also include character building activities.  Our family looks forward to completing the remainder of the lessons in this program.  So check out The Complete Starter Kit from The Kingdom Code, in order to teach money management skills with a Biblical context

Review of Hewitt Homeschooling Resources’ Lightning Literature & Composition – British Christian Authors 19th-20th Century

img_3552

I loved using Lightning Lit from Hewitt Homeschooling Resources with our second son before, so I was excited to have the opportunity to review British Christian Gr 11-12  with our 16-year-old daughter.  This program provides a great opportunity for our daughter to develop both her composition skills and her literary skills at the same time.  For this review, we received the student guide and the teacher guide.  However, the program also requires the purchase of four additional unabridged copies of The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis, Why Does God Allow War? by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton, and Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers.  Even though our daughter is in the 10th grade, she felt confident about her ability to complete the coursework.

Hewitt Homeschooling, since 1983, has functioned as proponents of homeschooling.  According to their website, “. Our emphasis includes combining excellent academics with character development, instilling the work ethic, and developing a spirit of community service in the next generation. With a current client base of over 30,000, Hewitt’s operation is currently divided into three sectors: services, testing, and products. Operating out of our facility in Washougal, Washington, we serve parents with students from kindergarten age through high-school.”

Lightning Literature at the high school level is meant to be covered over 18 weeks, however, we used a year-long pace since we were nearing the start of our summertime school schedule when this review started.  Both a semester-long and a year-long schedule are provided so families can use the one that best suits their needs.

img_3622

Students read, answer comprehension questions, complete literary lessons, writing exercises, along with reading articles which are sprinkled throughout the course that touch on late 19th through early 20th century British Christian Literature.  The four units, covering one of the four books, includes an introduction for the students to read, information about the selection, and information for while the student is reading.  Our daughter found these sections to be extremely useful.

Students are supposed to develop a vocabulary notebook and reading journal during the course.  For our purposes, instead of requiring our daughter to write everything out, we allowed her to complete the questions, vocabulary and reading journal on the computer using a word processing program.  I also permitted her to answer some of the questions orally to me rather than typing out her answers.

img_3623

The Student guide contains all the material the student needs to complete the course including an Introduction which discusses suggestions for reading and writing including brainstorming, outlining, revisions and citing research.  Suggestions for how to use the student guide are included along with Appendices that provide suggestions for Discussion Questions and Project Suggestions, additional reading suggestions, and schedules.  Plus there are suggestions for activities to enhance the student’s experience including developing a Vocabulary Notebook, a Reading Journal, Biographies and more.

img_3624

For each unit, there is an Introduction, Comprehension Questions, a Literary lesson – which for the first unit on C.S. Lewis is Writing a Five-paragraph essay.  Our daughter is working on narrowing her topic for her first essay on a hobby.  She is trying to decide between art and music.  We will see what she decides.  She plans on doing the brainstorming and outline for this first essay at the beginning of next week.

All of the Units follow the same basic pattern.  I look forward to reading and learning with our daughter throughout the remainder of the course.  She found the Student Guide easy to follow and easy to utilize.  For the Comprehension Questions, she found most of them straight forward, however a few required deeper thought and attention in order to answer.

img_3625

The Teacher Guide includes information about the Student Guide, the answers to the Comprehension Questions, Suggested Schedules for either a Semester Schedule or a Yearly Schedule, Writing Exercises, Discussion Questions, as well as project suggestions.  As one of our daughter’s projects, we decided she would memorize 1 Corinthians 13.  Our goal is to have her do a Bible Study with her father on fasting, but his schedule has not permitted that yet.

Review of the Hey Mama! Homeschool Planner from The Old Schoolhouse®

If you looking for a planner to help with your homeschool organization that comes with encouragement for the homeschooling mama, then I recommend you check out the Hey Mama! Homeschool Planner for 2019/20 Year with devotions written by Gena Suarez and published by The Old Schoolhouse®.  I have to say this is the time of the year when I begin to get excited about planning for the next school year.  And nothing gets me more excited about planning than a brand new planner that is just waiting to be written in by me.  A good planner helps keep our family on track, shows what we have done, and what we still need to do each year.
The Old Schoolhouse® provides a wide variety of products, services and more to the homeschooling community.  The Old Schoolhouse®  has been around since 2001.  I remember receiving our first issue of The Old Schoolhouse®magazine, our first year of homeschooling.  Through the years, it has become a staple around our home.  But more than just a magazine, the company offers so much more.  I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review the Hey Mama! Homeschool Planner for 2019/20 year.  Paul and Gena Suarez have done much to contribute to the world of homeschooling throughout the years.  I have to say this planner did not disappoint.
I am a planner junkie!  Nothing thrills me more than finding a new planner to try out.  I love the glossy cover of this planner along with the spiral bounding, which allows the planner to lay flat. The paper is of good quality and adds to the overall appeal of the planner.  I have to say this planner is not as detailed as many planners on the market.  However, it has everything a mother needs in a planner.  It is not too bulky, making it the perfect planner to take when you are on the go or have open when you are at home.
img_3495
With monthly calendar spreads, attendance sheets, lesson planning pages, devotions, and more this planner has quite a bit to offer.  However, it does not have so much that it becomes overwhelming.  It is just the right blend of function and information.  I love how the lesson planning pages include enough space for five children while offering enough space in the blocks to write what I need to record our lesson plans.
img_3497
This planner is definitely designed for mothers to use and is not necessarily a student planner.  I love having a planner for my own knowledge that allows me to quickly see what our two children are supposed to be doing on a given week.  I believe this is the perfect planner for homeschooling mothers.
I love how it includes attendance forms, book lists, yearly goal sheets, semester goal sheets, and even transcript forms.  This planner definitely has a lot to offer.  It even has devotions written by Gena Suarez included throughout the pages.  I found these devotions to be perfect for a homeschooling mother.
