Review and Giveaway for Building a Ridiculously Great Marriage

About the Book

Book:  Building a Ridiculously Great Marriage

Author: Gil Stieglitz

Genre: Christian Non-fiction

Release Date: November 2019

Building a Ridiculously Great Marriage: Pre-Marital and Marital Habits
It’s no secret that couples in great marriages do different things than couples in bad ones.
But what are those things and how do ordinary folks start doing them? How can couples take a struggling marriage or even one that is “pretty good” to one that is, quite frankly, ridiculously great?
Based on thousands of counseling hours and personal practice, Gil Stieglitz spells out the 15 essential habits found in great marriages that aren’t found in difficult ones. Building a Ridiculously Great Marriage provides the short and dirty version of what it takes to have a marriage that is so great, other couples will stand up and notice—they might even call it “ridiculous.”
This book is a real game-changer for engaged couples just starting out, couples who are struggling, or couples who just want to take their marriage from good to ridiculously great. It is also a terrific resource for pastors, ministry leaders, and counselors who work with couples for pre-marriage and marriage counseling.

Okay, I need to start off by saying the title of this book grabbed my attention.  I do not necessarily think of “ridiculous” as being a good way to describe a marriage.  But as I began reading Dr. Stieglitz explanation about “ridiculous” in terms of  marriage, I found myself caught up in his explanation.  After all, my husband and I have been married for over 27 years, and I want to be able to say that we have a “ridiculously great marriage.”

As I look back on the marriage of my husband’s paternal grandparents, I can honestly say they had a ridiculously great marriage.  The type of marriage they had is the type of marriage I want to have with my husband.

This book does an excellent job of providing guidance for steps to take to protect, strengthen, and nurture a marriage.  While I know our children will always be our children, I also recognize the fact that our children range from 23 to 17 and will eventually leave our home. I want to know my husband and I have taken steps to create a lasting, meaningful, and Biblically-based marriage that will stand the test of time.  This book provides tools and techniques for doing exactly that.  From things such as spending time alone together to scheduling a weekly “Staff meeting’, the ideas are ones that any couple can do (even those without a lot of extra money floating around.

So if you are looking for a book to strengthen and enrich your marriage, check out this book for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

Gil now serves as Discipleship Pastor at Bayside Church, a dynamic multi-site church near Sacramento, CA. More from Gil

After thousands of hours counseling couples for marriage and pre-marital issues, I had a few couples who just wanted to know the very basics of what they needed to do differently to have a much better marriage. These concepts, coupled with some pre-marital counseling I was doing at the time, allowed me to develop a quick and dirty list of the top ten habits couples should develop if they really wanted a terrific marriage. I asked them to trust me in what I was telling them, and they did what I requested. The results were amazing.
For the purposes of this book, I have added five more habits great couples do to make the material even more robust and effective, and I included the exercises I used in my counseling sessions for couples to practice and work out. Think of this book as the low down of what makes a marriage “ridiculously great.” This is the kind of marriage that will constantly surprise you with delight, love, growth, energy, longing, and connection. It is beyond the norm—where you feel like you lucked into this great relationship with this amazing person.
If you showed up in my office and asked me to give you the bottom line, these are the things I would tell you to do. Many people know what they are doing is not working, and they just want to know what to do. These fifteen things are what work…no joke.

Review of Letter From Paul

Letter from Paul FB banner

About the Book

Book: Letter from Paul

Author: Mary Weins

Genre:  Christian Non-Fiction, Bible study

Release Date: April 5, 2019

Letters from PaulA devotional workbook on Galatians that gives enough substance for the interactive part of the workbook. It is worthwhile for small groups or individuals.” Dr. Dennis Beatty

Draw closer to God. Revel in the knowledge that you are saved by grace, not works. Discover how Paul addressed the Galatian people when they veered from the truth back into bondage to the rules and customs of their time.

This Bible study takes you verse by verse through the book of Galatians, with insights into what occurred so many years ago yet is still relevant today. Bringing home the truth that we don’t have to perform a certain way to be accepted as heirs to Christ, Letter from Paul offers relief to those who feel pressured to live by the world’s standards.

You will be refreshed and renewed as you lean into the fact that God loves you just as you are. Yes, He has given us the commandments, but He doesn’t pile additional rules on us that we can’t possibly follow. Instead, He gives us grace. And mercy. And love.

“Galatians is about the difference between salvation by works and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not about obeying all the rules versus having a good time. It is about a personal relationship with our Creator and Savior.” – Mary Weins

One of my favorite books in the Bible is Galatians, a book written by Paul.  If God can use someone like Paul to spread His Gospel message, He can turn anyone else’s life around as well.  This book contains devotionals about imperfect people trying to turn their lives around to God and develop a deeper relationship with Him.  It demonstrates the importance of following God’s Word and being with God’s people.

The devotional section is followed by a conversation relating to the Bible, the book of Galatian, and the words of Paul.  It includes questions for reflection, some contain Scripture passages to refer to, while others call for inner reflection.  Personal application questions are also included, as well as points to ponder and prayers.

This workbook will cause you to think and should be read with your Bible and a notebook or other means of recording your thoughts and feelings.  So check it out for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

About the Author

Author Mary WeinAs a Pastor’s kid, Mary has been involved in the church most of her life. She has led many Bible study groups in homes, in the church environment, and in jails; Mary has worked in various women’s ministries, and is a writer, speaker and Bible Teacher.
Currently, Mary and her husband are retired and live in Northern California. They have 3 sons, and 5 grandchildren who live nearby. When not writing, speaking, leading Bible study groups, or studying God’s Word on her own, Mary enjoys entertaining friends, cooking, and playing with her grandchildren…not necessarily in that order.

More from Mary

Letter from Paul: to the Church in Galatia…and Us!

As a preacher’s kid, I was brought up in a strict, structured home environment. This upbringing created a harsh view of Christianity and an overwhelming fear of hell, fire, and damnation for me.

It was not until years later that I found a church emphasizing God’s love. I read the Word and prayed daily and began to develop a close, personal relationship with God. But fear kept haunting me until I really got into Galatians and broke it down, verse by verse. The book of Galatians is a crucial book of the Bible for me because it emphasizes God’s love and forgiveness and provides assurance that, even though I mess up at times, God still loves me!

It is my hope and prayer that you, too, can embrace the beautiful message of love and acceptance contained in Galatians and apply it to your life. When we fully submit and trust God for our lives, an overwhelming peace envelops us. We no longer need to fear Him. He is a loving God who provides all our needs and protects, encourages, comforts, and directs us. He is our heavenly Father, our constant companion, and a friend who really does have all the right answers.

Living in a right relationship with God dramatically changes the way we view ourselves and the world. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Cor. 5:17 KJV).

Written in a down-to-earth, easy-to-read approach, the Bible studies contained in Letter from Paulhighlight the main points covered in each chapter of Galatians.

It is my hope and prayer that this book will erase the doubts and fears of Christians who question their salvation or fear that they are not good enough to maintain it and to point the way for the unsaved to realize how easy it is to become a child of God.

Review and Giveaway for FROM THE GARDEN INTO ETERNITY

From the Garden into Eternity FB Cover

About the Book

Book: From the Garden into Eternity

Author: Pearl Nsiah-Kumi

Genre: Religious-Christian Evangelism

Release Date: June 25, 2018

From the Garden to Eternity - straight view

From the Garden into Eternity tells of mankind’s fall from God’s grace beginning in the Garden of Eden, all the way through to one’s individual choice: Will eternity be spent in Heaven with God or Hell with Satan?

As a result of sin, mankind suffered a loss of close fellowship with God – but do not fret!  The relationship can be restored in this life right into the next!  God does not, however, force anyone into a relationship with Him.  We are free to choose Him or the alternative: Satan.

This book, fully-supported by Bible verses, helps you determine where you are in this journey called “life”.  Rest assured that God loves you and longs to give you eternal life in Heaven with Him, but you must first repent and place your faith in Jesus Christ.  If you have never taken that step, please don’t wait any longer.  The alternative eternity – which will be by default – will be dreadful.

Call on Jesus today!

Start the relationship that guarantees your eternity in Heaven with God!

Covering topics from the fact that God wants to have a relationship with us to Christ’s Role in the God’s Redemptive plan, this book covers a lot of ground.  I believe this book has something to offer both new Christians and those who want to rekindle their relationship with God.  This book examines everything from becoming a Christian until the time you leave this earth to enter God’s Kingdom.

This book is a short read that contains quite a bit of information. I encourage you to read it with your Bible open and a notebook to record any thoughts you might have while reading.

One thing I do appreciate this book is how in many cases only Scripture references are given because this allows the reader to look up the passages in whatever Bible they prefer reading.  After all, the Bible is meant to provide God’s people with knowledge of Him, His love, and His guidelines we need to follow.  So check out this book for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

About the Author

Pearl Nsiah-Kumi - black dress portrait

Pearl Nsiah-Kumi is a retired Registered Nurse; she grew up in Ghana, West Africa. She has lived in the USA for forty years and has three adult children, one son-in-law and four beautiful grandchildren. Pearl has authored two books in the past two years and loves to express her understanding of the Bible through writing articles and poems. Her goal is two-fold: To reach people with the truth of God’s word in inviting them to experience faith in Jesus Christ, and also to encourage Christians to mature in walking faithfully with their God through obedience to Him. In addition to writing, Pearl is also a Volunteer Counselor at a local Crisis Pregnancy Clinic.

More from Pearl

I wrote this book: FROM THE GARDEN INTO ETERNITY, because I felt the need to explain step-by-step how we, people created in the image of God lost our relationship with Him, and how that relationship could be restored. Along with the explanation, I also felt the need to stress the urgency of the restoration of that relationship. Why the urgency? It is urgent, because time is running out for all of us, and if one’s relationship isn’t restored in this life, eternity will be awful. Since no one knows how much time they have left in this life, we each need to respond to God’s love now, so we can have the assurance of a blissful eternity in heaven. Each person has to make a personal decision about their eternity.

For quite a number of years, our family has utilized essential oils as a way of helping us breath easier.  So when I saw the opportunity to review this book, I was glad to participate in this tour. I desire to learn more about essential oils and how they were used during Biblical times.

When I first met my husband who was a deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church started by his grandfather, I frequently saw my husband, his father, and often his grandfather go to those who were sick in order to anoint them with oils and pray for them.  In James 5:14, we are told, “14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord”.  This reference provides a reason to use oils in the ways God directed His people to do so.

From cooking to romance to a joy-filled life, and more, Teri Secrest does an incredible job of looking at essential oils.  Bringing in the story of Queen Esther provided a wonderful Biblical reference.  This book is a wonderful read for any Christian wanting to learn more about essential oils.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

Review and Giveaway for WONDERFUL YAH: THE UNVEILING

Wonderful Yah

 About the Book

Book: Wonderful Yah: The Unveiling

Author: Matthew Marx

Genre: Non-Fiction, Christian, Theology

Release Date: July 22, 2019

WonderfulYah_CoverCWhat is His name, and what is His Son’s name, if you know? This intriguing question from the book of Proverbs seems to echo the question in so many of our hearts: Who is God really? Over the past two millennia, people have tried to understand the mystery of the divinity of God using logic and thinking, but it fails every time. The Godhead does not operate or function as people do, and God is not subject to human reasoning. Yet understanding the mystery of the Godhead is both simple and profound when we know how to use the key Jesus gave us.

This book begins by accepting the challenge of some of the most thought-provoking Scriptures in the entire Bible—Proverbs 30:2–4. Throughout the book’s exploration of the divinity of God, a power hidden within God’s Hebrew name is discovered and then unleashed to answer the question, What is His name, and what is the name of His Son? The mystery of the Godhead is then subdued as God’s Hebrew name erupts as the correct foundation on which to discuss the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Scriptural doors that once seemed impenetrable now open easily with a turn of a key, helping you to connect with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in a deeper, more focused way.

Utilizing the Book of Proverbs, this study concentrates on who God really is.  I wish I could say I was completely captivated by this study, but I found it slightly on the dry side. While  I thoroughly enjoyed some parts, others left me struggling to continue reading.

I feel this particular book is more for students of Theology rather than the average Christian.  I found the use of references from the Strong’s Concordance to be helpful.  I also believe having some knowledge of Biblical Greek and Hebrew may be helpful as well.

I believe all Christians desire to know more about who God is to them personally.  I believe many people will find this book interesting and worth reading. However, I believe it is worth reading, but I personally had a hard time with it.  I urge you to check out this book and come to your own conclusions about it.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

About the Author

img_8140After spending twenty-five years working with the severe and persistently mentally ill, Matthew William Marx felt a burden to pray for those struggling to understand Jesus. His prayers led him to a deeper understanding of God, which he is now sharing with his readers. Matthew is a graduate of Oral Roberts University and holds a master’s degree in social work. He is licensed with the state of Michigan, where he lives with his wife, Suzanne.

More from Matthew

Wow! Who would have known? Normally, non-fiction books like Wonderful YaH: The Unveiling primarily focus on: what is the problem and how to fix it. However, wouldn’t it be intriguing if a non-fiction book incorporated some elements of a fiction book such as mystery, suspense, and drama, with the reader bring the drama as they deal with their internal dialogue on how to answer a proposed question to help solve the mystery. Be aware, however, that this type of adventure and journey is not for the timid or light of heart. Taking fiction elements such as mystery, suspense, and drama and placing them in a non-fiction book could produce a real-world reality shift that is different from what the reader has known or experienced—Wonderful YaH: The Unveiling is one such book.

Come and join me on a non-fiction journey and adventure that incorporates some elements of fiction that explore, explain, and solve two of the greatest mysteries of the Bible. The two great mysteries to which I refer are (1) the divinity of Jesus Christ in the Godhead, and (2) how our lives and the choices we make fit into God’s will and divine providence. Many smart and wise people, over the past two thousand years, have tried to explain and solve these two mysteries but have fallen short typically. Wonderful YaH: The Unveiling fills the gaps left by previous attempts to solve these two great mysteries by discovering the hidden power in God’s Hebrew name, then harnessing that power to solve the mysteries.

You might ask, “What is the point of being able to solve these two great mysteries, and what does it have to do with me”? The point is to know the One who created everything and to figure out how our lives fit into His grand scheme of everything. More simply stated, what is our purpose for being on planet earth? Surely, there is more to life than just being born, living for a few decades if you are fortunate, then dying. Isn’t it worth asking: Is our life more than just a blade of grass that is here today then gone tomorrow? If there were an answer to this mystery, wouldn’t it be nice to find the answer to this mystery before we die? People often read fiction for the adventure of mystery and suspense. Why not read a non-fiction book that offers mystery and suspense but with real-life consequences?

Book: Leaders, Nations, & God

Author: Marta E. Greenman

Genre: Non-Fiction, Christian Bible Study

Release Date: September 19, 2013

Leaders, Nations, and God Book CoverLEADERS, NATIONS, AND GOD invites readers to a six-week journey to explore the Bible’s message for the nations of the world, their leaders, and for Christians who live as citizens of those nations. By focusing on the biblical history of Israel and the United States, the reader discovers the nature of true, faithful leadership and the consequences when a leader compromises, as well as the sorts of nations that God may bless. Marta E. Greenman helps readers understand how scriptural principles apply to nations and to individuals alike.

Each day’s study begins by encouraging the reader to write their prayer before they begin to examine the biblical history of Israel and/or the United States. The reader gathers insights from scripture to bring understanding of God’s ideal for nations and leaders. Questions dig deeply into lessons from the Bible, history, and the influences on one’s own life. Each day’s study comes with highlighted “Questions to Ponder” and ends with prayer.

If you find yourself drawn to explore God’s will for nations and individuals, if you wonder what biblical obedience might look like in your daily life, then Leaders, Nations, and God will meet your need for a study grounded in the Bible and focused on God’s desires for His people.

Leaders Nations and God provides 6 weeks of Biblical study that explore what the Bible has to say to the nations of the world.  In the times we live in today, Christians need to recognize what true Christian leadership looks like and what nations need to do in order to receive God’s blessings.

The study examines topics such as In the Beginning, Consequences of Compromise, People Perish for Lack of Knowledge, United We Stand Divided We Fall, Formulating a Plan, and Taking Action.  Some of my favorite sections include the Consequences of Compromise and  United We Stand Divided We Fall.

Given the times we live in today and the things that are currently going in the world, this study is a good reminder we need to pray and be diligent to study and examine God’s Words for ourselves.

So if you are looking for a timely Bible study, check out this study for yourself.

I received a copy of this study for my fair and honest review.

More from Marta

What a profound statement made by George Santayana, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” As Christians we need to learn those who have gone before us. In Leaders, Nations, and God we look at the history of the Children of Israel and America’s Founding Fathers to become men and women who understand the time and know how to navigate the troubled waters of today. We look at questions like “Who does God consider to be a leader?” What kind of nation does the Lord bless?” “Did America’s Founding Fathers really set up our country on Judeo-Christian values?”

Overcoming Depression provides insight into erasing doubts, blame, and shame that many people face in today’s world.  This book provides a Scriptural basis for facing these ideas head-on and overcoming them through God’s power.

The book helps provide a framework for building personal skills for recovery and more.  Combining neurobiology, science, and Scripture, this book provides a powerful way of looking at depression and dealing with it.  Whether you are someone who suffers from depression, knows someone suffering from depression, or working in the field, this book has something to offer you.  I found the insights and ideas worth reading.

So check this book out for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

About the Author

margaret lalichMargaret Lalich is a believer, a lover (family, friends and others), a relentless optimist, and a Certified Laughter Leader. Before becoming a college freshman (in her 30’s), she chose a teen marriage over graduation.  Later adventures, and mid-life corrections, led to completion of her M.S. and M.A. degrees and a 31-year career as a clinician and teacher, within mental health.

Laughter and tears are both found in experience. Tears can wash away emotional rubble, and laughter can be a ‘bungee-cord’ safety-life-line. If we fall into a pit of despair, laughter helps us rebound and boosts our climb. Margaret loves to share it.

Margaret is a mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma who writes stories and non-fiction – highlighting experience, science, strategies, and hope. She wants to connect with readers — helping them find (and use) their gifts, and to live their own definition of ‘success’ – to the Glory of God.

More from Margaret

I have been asked WHY I wanted to write this book.  It’s because I ache for believers who suffer the pain of depression – and then add guilt, embarrassment, loss of hope, or helplessness to it. I want them to know they are heroes – not zeroes (no matter how they’re feeling). I want to share strategies, encouragement and the sheer excitement of scientific discovery that proves we have more power than we may have imagined, to help us climb out of the ‘pit’.

Yes, I am a bit of a cheerleader, and at times a clown – but I’m also a researcher and a clinician who has shared the wonder of such discoveries with more than a thousand patients. I have also been asked how long it took to finish this book. Not too long … just 31 years to learn and live it – and 3 years to research and write it.  Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 1.

First Things First:  Christians and Depression

“ For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1:7

Church is not a museum for perfect saints — it’s a first aid station for sinners who keep trying. I can’t recall the name of the pastor, who delivered that line, but his message resonated with me then and it still does today. I want to contribute to First-Aid supplies

God says He is for us, and we are loved. We can trust, and we must believe His Word. But, it can be hard to reconcile faith with depression, anxiety or other mental health issues. If you have struggled with this – you’re not alone. Right from the start, you need to know you are loved. We’re in this together.

Doubts and fears can seed questions such as:

“What’s happening?”

“Why?”

“Now what?”

If you ask these questions, be assured God hears the cry of your heart. By His grace, we will explore answers together. Yes, there are answers. Yes, there is hope and help that you can use – right where you are, starting now.

…Blame is a distraction. We cast blame on ourselves with hurtful thinking when we think or say things like: “If I had enough faith this wouldn’t happen.” Or, “ I should be stronger …  blah, blah, blah.”  Don’t surrender to this way of thinking.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

There has been a revolution in the study of the brain (neuroscience). We’ve started to understand brain-works, and can now answer the first of our opening questions: “What’s happening?” With today’s technology and new imaging systems we can see the brain in action as thoughts, and new learning, form physical links, creating neural patterns and pathways within the brain.

The glory of God is revealed as we discover more of His divine design, and watch new scientific findings align with the old wisdom of God’s word for mankind.  Proverbs 23:7 says: “For as he thinks in his heart, so he is.” We have learned that what we think helps to form who, and what we are. We can use this knowledge to build recovery skills.
