Courage to Thrive contains 40 devotionals geared towards topics such as letting go, strength, peace, joy, and more. Written by a priest who struggles with mental health issues, this book explores the subject with great depth. Each of the 40 devotionals contain a passage of Scripture, insights and information, a prayer, and journaling prompt.

To me, this book requires involvement rather than passive reading. Just because a person is a Christian or even a priest, mental health issues potentially rear their head and require attention. Whether you have struggled with these issues yourself or know someone who has, check out this book for yourself.

Rev. Dr. Bob Flanagan has struggled with mental illness and managed to thrive for over twenty years. He holds a doctorate of ministry degree in Christian Spirituality and is an adjunct faculty member at General Theological Seminary in New York City, teaching on Christian spirituality. He has served for over ten years as a state and federal advocate for and board member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. His previous book, Growing a Sustainable Soul, won a bronze medal in the Reader’s Favorite International Book Contest. Bob lives with his wife, Lanie, in Bridgewater, Connecticut. They have two grown children.

Glorious Mess contains 6 weeks of study materials broken down into daily lessons. Ever since I first read about Hannah in the Bible, I have been captivated by her story. Each lesson contains 4 sections: the actual lesson, a section for reflection, Prayers, and discussion questions.

Sometimes circumstances make us want to scream, “Quit already!” but Hannah’s story points us to God who is faithful, patient, and intimate. The story and study drew me in and made me want to continue. I felt the lessons contained enough material to be interesting without being overwhelming.

The study draws me closer to God, which I feel everyone can benefit from. So check out this book for yourself.

Glorious Mess is the Biblical study of Hannah. As a perfectionist and control-freak, I had a neat and tidy life. That is until everything fell apart, and I found myself crying out to God for healing when life got out of control in so many areas. The more my world spun out of control, the more I identified with Hannah. She taught me about authenticity, grace, and perseverance. Her rival, Peninnah, taught me how to handle mean-spirited people and brought my own flaws to the surface so God could deal with them.

Year after year, I cried out for the healing I so desperately wanted at the foot of the cross. Mistreatment from others, the pain of watching others hurt, and my own weaknesses led me back to Hannah’s story time and again. It was Hannah’s journey from broken to bold and beautiful that kept me going. I wanted her confidence in the Lord. Faith remains one of the greatest gift we can pass on to our children and grandchildren. This is known as l’dor v’dor in Judaism meaning, “from generation to generation,” and expresses how faith passes down from one generation to the next through the holy observances and traditions that happen within the life of the family.

For many years, I have followed the blog and ministry of The Fellowship. As a born-again Christian, I recognize the importance of the values of the Jewish faith, so I gratefully accepted the opportunity to read this book.

As I began reading, I found myself pulled into the pages. As the mother of four – three sons in their 20s and a daughter who is almost 18, I recognize the importance of passing our faith down through the generations.

I appreciate Yael Eckstein’s ability to share her family’s traditions, observances, and more through the pages of this book. Each chapter includes Jewish observances, how their family incorporate those teachings in their family, how the observances relates to Christians and questions and stories to discuss with your family. It presents a selection of Bible verses which emphasize a key value. The book remains a tribute to Yael Eckstein’s father. The connection between the Jewish faith and Christianity remains indisputable. This book draws connections between the two faiths while illustrating how to build relationships with faith that span generations.

I’ve always been the one to ask the questions. As a kindergartener, I embarrassed my mother when I inquired, “Where did I come from?” Years passed, as a teenager, I made unhealthy life choices, experimented with alcohol and street drugs, and wondered, “What am I here for?” As a young adult, in Bible College; I asked God to take control of my life and questioned, “What’s my purpose?” Maybe you, too, have had or now have questions? These concerns may even keep you up at night? Doubting ourselves or God may be criticized as a lack of faith. I disagree. Doubt is the in between. Doubts need to be addressed. If doubts are not considered, they will rot our faith from the inside out. When we doubt, we are able to be honest with ourselves and God. We should not be afraid to doubt.

As a delivered drug addict, stage four cancer survivor, and former widow, I’ve faced many types of situations which caused me to question God’s love, goodness and compassion. As I have gone to His word, I’ve discovered He hasn’t changed, His word continues to speak and revives my faith, taking me to a deeper level every single time. I am reminded of this in Lamentations 3:21-24 (NIV) Yet this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.  I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

The book is divided into six chapters with five lessons in each chapter.  The stories from the author and other women bring the book to life.  I found the book to be one that caused me to want to study more and dive deeper into God’s Word.

This book is definitely worth reading.  So check it out for yourself.

Okay, I need to start off by saying the title of this book grabbed my attention.  I do not necessarily think of “ridiculous” as being a good way to describe a marriage.  But as I began reading Dr. Stieglitz explanation about “ridiculous” in terms of  marriage, I found myself caught up in his explanation.  After all, my husband and I have been married for over 27 years, and I want to be able to say that we have a “ridiculously great marriage.”

As I look back on the marriage of my husband’s paternal grandparents, I can honestly say they had a ridiculously great marriage.  The type of marriage they had is the type of marriage I want to have with my husband.

This book does an excellent job of providing guidance for steps to take to protect, strengthen, and nurture a marriage.  While I know our children will always be our children, I also recognize the fact that our children range from 23 to 17 and will eventually leave our home. I want to know my husband and I have taken steps to create a lasting, meaningful, and Biblically-based marriage that will stand the test of time.  This book provides tools and techniques for doing exactly that.  From things such as spending time alone together to scheduling a weekly “Staff meeting’, the ideas are ones that any couple can do (even those without a lot of extra money floating around.

So if you are looking for a book to strengthen and enrich your marriage, check out this book for yourself.

One of my favorite books in the Bible is Galatians, a book written by Paul.  If God can use someone like Paul to spread His Gospel message, He can turn anyone else’s life around as well.  This book contains devotionals about imperfect people trying to turn their lives around to God and develop a deeper relationship with Him.  It demonstrates the importance of following God’s Word and being with God’s people.

The devotional section is followed by a conversation relating to the Bible, the book of Galatian, and the words of Paul.  It includes questions for reflection, some contain Scripture passages to refer to, while others call for inner reflection.  Personal application questions are also included, as well as points to ponder and prayers.

This workbook will cause you to think and should be read with your Bible and a notebook or other means of recording your thoughts and feelings.  So check it out for yourself.

Letter from Paul: to the Church in Galatia…and Us!

As a preacher’s kid, I was brought up in a strict, structured home environment. This upbringing created a harsh view of Christianity and an overwhelming fear of hell, fire, and damnation for me.

It was not until years later that I found a church emphasizing God’s love. I read the Word and prayed daily and began to develop a close, personal relationship with God. But fear kept haunting me until I really got into Galatians and broke it down, verse by verse. The book of Galatians is a crucial book of the Bible for me because it emphasizes God’s love and forgiveness and provides assurance that, even though I mess up at times, God still loves me!

It is my hope and prayer that you, too, can embrace the beautiful message of love and acceptance contained in Galatians and apply it to your life. When we fully submit and trust God for our lives, an overwhelming peace envelops us. We no longer need to fear Him. He is a loving God who provides all our needs and protects, encourages, comforts, and directs us. He is our heavenly Father, our constant companion, and a friend who really does have all the right answers.

Living in a right relationship with God dramatically changes the way we view ourselves and the world. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Cor. 5:17 KJV).

Covering topics from the fact that God wants to have a relationship with us to Christ’s Role in the God’s Redemptive plan, this book covers a lot of ground.  I believe this book has something to offer both new Christians and those who want to rekindle their relationship with God.  This book examines everything from becoming a Christian until the time you leave this earth to enter God’s Kingdom.

This book is a short read that contains quite a bit of information. I encourage you to read it with your Bible open and a notebook to record any thoughts you might have while reading.

One thing I do appreciate this book is how in many cases only Scripture references are given because this allows the reader to look up the passages in whatever Bible they prefer reading.  After all, the Bible is meant to provide God’s people with knowledge of Him, His love, and His guidelines we need to follow.  So check out this book for yourself.

I wrote this book: FROM THE GARDEN INTO ETERNITY, because I felt the need to explain step-by-step how we, people created in the image of God lost our relationship with Him, and how that relationship could be restored. Along with the explanation, I also felt the need to stress the urgency of the restoration of that relationship. Why the urgency? It is urgent, because time is running out for all of us, and if one’s relationship isn’t restored in this life, eternity will be awful. Since no one knows how much time they have left in this life, we each need to respond to God’s love now, so we can have the assurance of a blissful eternity in heaven. Each person has to make a personal decision about their eternity.
