My husband has been an ordained Primitive Baptist Preacher for almost 27 years.  So Bible studies, Bible Word Studies, and more have been a tremendous part of our lives.  Acts is one of my favorite books of the Bible.  I love reading about the early church, the day of Pentecost, and about Saul/Paul.  So when I received the opportunity to review ACTS420NOW, I was thrilled.

The words of this study challenged me to dig deeper into God’s Word and think about what I truly believe.  I loved the format of the workbook and how it was written.  I found the questions to complete to cause me to reflect on what it must have been like to live during the time after Jesus Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection.

When looking for a Bible Study workbook, I love finding ones that are broken down into daily assignments.  This feature allows me to really dig deeper into what is being studied that day.

So if you are looking for a Biblically sound study about the book of Acts and the early Church, check out this book for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

If you want a book that includes Biblical passages, Biblical stories, and personal stories wrapped up into one incredible package, check out this book for yourself.  This book made me laugh, cry, and more as I read the pages.  Let’s face it, at times all of us feel worn down and frustrated.  This book does an excellent job of showing how to face hard times with God’s grace and mercy.

The accounts of  Xochitl Dixon’s experiences with a chronic illness reminded me of my experiences with chronic high blood pressure and arthritis.  I could relate to what she had to say.  Her experiences with her mother dealing with cancer also resonated with me.  This book demonstrates that sometimes we just have to wait on God, but we can find people and experiences to bless us during those times.

The amazing way God often sends people to us at just the right time with just the right words or actions to lighten our burdens also resonate through these pages as well.

I found myself not wanting to put the book down.  So check it out for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

More from Xochitl

“Never pray for patience.”

My friend’s warning pricked at the back of my mind. Without realizing it, I began lacing my prayers with fear, doubt, and caution. I couldn’t risk being thrust into situations that would force me to develop patience, so I did everything in my power to avoid asking the Lord to help me be patient.

But even when I didn’t ask Him to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in me, I always seemed to end up in circumstances that stretched my faith as much as my patience.

When my agent challenged me to write the book I had to write, I pitched Waiting for God: Trusting Daily in God’s Plan and Pace.

I thought I’d be sharing tips about how to persevere through trials and endure suffering with grace. But after I signed the contract and received a deadline for my manuscript, my husband received an unexpected job offer.

We followed the Lord from California to Wisconsin.

Writing became a challenge as I suffered a setback in my healing journey. I endured high levels of pain and fatigue. My husband and I struggled with frustration as we adjusted to life in the Midwest during one of the coldest winters in history.

And God changed my perspective on waiting for Him, which has nothing to do with patience.

I’ll be sharing my answers to the end-of-chapter questions on my blog (www.xedixon.com). I’m excited to invite you to join the adventure.

I look forward to growing with you as we wait for God, inhaling His Word, exhaling in prayer, and resting in His love as we trust daily in His plan and pace.

Gators, Guts, and Glory is a book that captures the spirit I believe is an inherent part of hiking any part of the Appalachian Trail.  While in college in Asheville, North Carolina, I was able to hike some pieces of the Appalachian Trail.  Plus, I had a friend who desired to hike the entire length of the Trail from Maine to Florida.  The idea intrigues me, but after reading this book I am not sure I have what it takes to do the whole trail.  However, this book definitely makes me desire to do at least parts of the trail.

I think one of my favorite parts in the book is where she talks about the “Water Buffalos”.  Because my husband’s MOS (meaning his job) is a “Water Dawg” – meaning he deals with everything from laying water lines to dealing with a Water Buffalo, I immediately recognized what she was talking about before she provided the explanation given to her.

The descriptions given made me feel as though I was actually with her.  The only part I did not like was the mosquitoes since I swell up in ridiculous ways from their bites.

All in all, this is an excellent book about combining faith with adventure.  I appreciated how others were willing to provide assistance, even when strangers – such as the Paisley twins.  So if you are interested in hiking, faith, Florida, or adventure, check out this book for yourself.

About the Author

Lauralee Bliss FloridaLauralee Bliss is an avid adventurer, one of only a few women to hike the entire Appalachian Trail both north and south. She makes her home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

More from Lauralee

Why hike the Florida Trail of all things?

L – I’ve had several adventures under my belt, like completing the Appalachian Trail twice (see book one in the Hiking Adventure Series – Mountains, Madness and Miracles – 4000 Miles Along the Appalachian Trail)! We used to vacation in Florida as many do come winter, and once we came upon the Florida Trail sign. I couldn’t imagine hiking among the palm trees. After talking to other hikers who had done it, I knew it would be a unique experience unlike any other. After all, why should life be boring?

It all sounds kind of dangerous – the alligators, the swamps. Were you scared?

L – I’ll admit there are facets of hiking that can cause scary situations. Once I got stuck in mud-like quicksand. In Florida, it’s known as sucking mud, and I thought I’d never get out of it. Can you imagine? I also had some rough weather, dangerous water crossings, and an encounter with a cottonmouth. But through it, I learned about God’s peace and His saving hand in situations where you really have no control.

What did you do to prepare?

L – I hiked as much as I could. I talked with other hikers and asked questions. I joined online trail forums to find out about the Florida Trail. I bought the guidebook for it. I believe one should always try to prepare and not venture into something blind. But of course, there’s always the unexpected, which adds to the adventure aspect.

What lessons did you learn?

L – What one can accomplish in life if you keep going and not give up, despite the challenging situations thrust your way. I like to go on these journeys to witness God’s care in my life firsthand and seeing the kindness of others to help a hiker in need. I’ve had people try to give me money. Folks that invited me into their homes or given me rides. The human spirit is amazing and one of the most valuable things I experienced.

What else can you tell us about yourself?

L – I am an avid adventurer covering thousands of trail miles in the US from east to west including two completions of the Appalachian Trail, the Colorado Trail, the Long Trail of Vermont, the Allegheny Trail of West Virginia, and the Foothills Trail of South Carolina. I have also authored over 25 romance novels and novellas and when not writing or hiking, I love to talk to others about hiking. My motto is – make your dream come true! (and it has, in more ways than one)

en391la0

With a girlfriend’s companionship and a professional counselor’s expertise, Dr. Laurel Shaler walks you through personal stories and biblical insights that shed light on daily and traumatic stress. In Reclaiming Sanity, she shows

  • How to find freedom from the past
  • Five myths about anger and how to overcome them
  • The antidote for nagging worry and sleepless nights
  • Ways to rebuild trust in others
  • How Christ gives true strength

Offering effective action steps toward reclaiming sanity, Dr. Shaler guides you through the healing process, whether you are dealing with a one-time traumatic event or years of hidden pain.

img_1508-1

Whether you are a victim of stress, trauma, or just overwhelming life events, or are someone wanting to support someone in your life, Reclaiming Sanity: Hope and Healing for Trauma, Stress, and Life Events has something to offer.Dr. Shaler writes from a person, compassionate and first-hand knowledge about the subject.  The book was easy to read and contained a wealth of knowledge, insight and more.  I appreciated how she was able to differentiate between the types of trauma and stress while recognizing the lasting effects any of the above might have on a person’s life.

I love her Biblical examination of anger and other situations found in life.  One of the most relevant pieces of the book to me is her discussion about forgiveness.  Forgiveness is not necessarily for the sole benefit of the one being forgiven.  A lack of forgiveness provides the potential for long-term and even unnoticed effects on the one that needs to grant forgiveness.

I also love how in the last part of the book she describes how to have your own mini retreat.  Truly, everyone at one time or another may benefit from experiencing a mini-retreat.  The details and suggestions in this suggestion   The options include everything from calming breaths to progressive muscle relaxation, to a Reclaiming Sanity retreat.   Reclaiming Clarity, Reclaiming Me, Reclaiming peace, and Reclaiming Sanity all play a role.  It is a matter of going through the steps and searching our hearts for God’s wisdom and knowledge.

So if you are looking for a book about taking back your life or helping someone else take back their life from stress, hard life happenings, or other traumatic events, check out this book for yourself.
