Imagine present-day lady author meets Regency period man, and at first believes she is just dreaming. Add in a grandmother who mysteriously vanished and a cottage that is about to be demolished and a few other plot twists and you have Forever, Lately.   This story has to be one of the most interesting takes on time travel I have read.
I love how Claire and St. John come together, even when he does not necessarily believe her tale of time travel.  This book contains a bit of danger, intrigue, adventure, high-speed car chases and more.
The inclusion of God and faith adds a lot to this story as do the plot twists and turns. The author does an excellent job of talking about God without being preachy.
Add in Clarissa, the Regency lady who either wants St John for herself or plans to kill him and the story develops even more.  The characters are well-developed.  The storyline kept my interest.  The settings were amazingly described.  Truly this is a book worth reading.  So check it out for yourself.
I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

About the Author

Linore_SmallerLinore Rose Burkard wrote a trilogy of genuine regency romances for the Christian market before there were any regencies for the Christian market. Published with Harvest House, her books opened the genre for the CBA. She also writes YA Suspense/Apocalyptic fiction as L.R. Burkard. Married with five children, Linore home-schools her youngest daughter, teaches workshops for writers, and is the Vice President of the Dayton Christian Scribes.  Her latest  PULSE EFFEX SERIES, takes readers into a “chilling possible future for America, while affirming the power of faith in the darkest of times.”

More from Linore

I wanted to write a Regency time travel for years. When I saw the movie “Kate and Leopold” I thought, Oh no! Someone used my idea! But I needn’t have worried. Leopold (Hugh Jackman) was a Victorian gentleman, not a Regencian. Secondly, though I enjoyed the flick, I kept thinking it missed many opportunities for humor. (Having written a screenplay since then, I now realize why it missed so many: tight scripts just don’t have room for all the scenes that could be fun.) When I wrote my story, however, I was able to include a lot of the humor scenes that had been floating around in my head for eons. It’s one of the reasons the book is a lot of fun to read—particularly when the Regency hero appears in the present.

On a side note, I started this book and then dropped it—for years—mostly because I wanted to write it as Christian romance like my other Regencies. But I kept running into roadblocks. And Christian publishers weren’t interested. Finally I realized I had to let God out of MY box and write the story he was giving me, not the one I thought he should give me. After that, it came together remarkably easily and quickly. And, I think, in a very fun way. I might even do a sequel.

Review of HIGASFY Art History Video Series

img_0210

have-i-got-a-story-for-you-logo

I have struggled with how to add art education to our homeschool but HiGASFY Art History Video Series made it possible to add this subject to our homeschool day.  I need to state from the beginning, however, I really wanted this subscription for myself.  For years I have wanted to develop some artistic talent.  Growing up, my older sister was the artist in our family and I did not want to try to compete with her.  So I elected to stay away from art.  I love having an online art curriculum that combines videos, and a curriculum bundle.

img_0255

The curriculum bundle includes lesson plans, Name that Artist activities, and flashcards for each era.  All of these can be printed out. However, I wanted to conserve ink, so I elected to download these items to my tablet where I could quickly and easily access them.  I elected to print the lesson plans in black and white so I could complete some of the activities such as the crossword puzzles and word searches.

img_0293

But my husband and I have three sons ages 23, almost 21, and almost 19 along with our daughter who is almost 17.  All four of these children at various points in their lives have demonstrated they are artistically talented. So I am determined to see what talent I can develop.  Because I attended a college that emphasized the Humanities, I recognize the importance of combining art history with the actual practice of art.

img_0292

HIGASFY combines the best of art history, artwork, and various activities that go across the curriculum spectrum.  Rather than being presented in a dry and boring manner, Mrs. Beth brings art to life along with her animated sidekick Gasfy who is a drop of paint.  Aimed at children in grades 1-8, I feel the videos capture the spirit and interests of children of all ages.

img_0211

The curriculum covers 4 different art eras: Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist. I elected to begin with the Impressionism period.  Recently I have become fascinated with the art and artists from this period.  This selection did not disappoint.  Mrs. Beth and Gafsy take you on a tour through art eras covering a plethora of artists, cultural events of that era all while examining masterpieces for what makes that period unique.

img_0292

The lessons plan clearly lay out what needs to be completed each day.  I love how free drawing days are included throughout the study.  I also appreciated how vocabulary words were included in the lesson plans as well.  Students need to know the terms that apply to a given period or artistic style.  In addition to the drawing activities, additional activities provided range from writing assignments to geography assignments to science to critical thinking skills and more.  On some days no videos are required, but instead free drawing assignments are given.

img_0312

The “Name that Artist” cards for each period provide examples of each artist’s pieces along with the name of the artist and the name of the piece.  This feature allows students to review artists they have already studied.  If my daughter was in grades 1-8 and she was the one doing this program, I would have printed out the cards and had them laminated to make them last longer.  Otherwise, I feel viewing them on my computer or tablet for me is fine.

img_0307

The flashcards provide pieces of artwork on one side of the card while the other side shows the artist’s name and the name of the piece.  I love how these cards go hand-in-hand to reinforce what the students are learning.

Hre are some of the drawing activities I attempted.

As an adult, I found the historical aspects, the artists selected, and the artwork selected to be inspiring.  I loved how the activities suggested go across curriculum lines and develop a well-rounded art program.

All in all, I have to say I feel HiGASFY Art History Video Series offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about art history and art education in a creative and inspiring way.  So check it out for yourself.  Other members of the Home School Review Crew are sharing their thoughts about this program this week as well.  Click here or on the graphic below to read more reviews.

Review of College-Ready Writing Essentials™ from BetterRhetoric

teachable_br_logo
For success, college students need strong academic writing skills so we were excited to use and review the Premium Package of College-Ready Writing Essentials™ from BetterRhetor. Our eighteen-year-old son is approaching the time when he will be filling out college applications and having to write essays for his application, so I was excited for us to have the opportunity to review the premium package of this product.

BetterRhetoric strives to improve a student’s academic writing and provide for student success both when applying for and while attenidng college.  Regardless of what major a student strives for college readiness has to include proficient writing skills.

This online program includes a variety of videos, worksheets, and more to guide the student through the process of writing a persuasive essay.  Because my husband and I also have aspirations to get our masters degrees in the future, I felt this program would also be worthwhile for us to watch.  So in addition to our son watching the videos and doing the assignments, I did them as well.  Probably at some point in the future my husband will go through the material as well.

The course materials are located on the Teachable platform, which we found very easy to use. The course builds on each previous lesson from the overview in Lesson 1 to selecting a topic in lesson 3 to the outline in Lesson 10 to writing the introduction, this course provides excellent instruction, directions, and worksheets to help the students prepare.  Here are pictures of the course contents.

Our family loved how the worksheets could be filled out online and saved to a file either on our own computer or an online application that allowed our son to work on his paper wherever he was.  Here are some of the completed worksheets.

Because we selected the premium package, we also submitte a copy of the essay to be reviewed.  We opted to send in a rough draft of the essay.  With just a click of a few keys, the essay was emailed for review.  We received a prompt notification that our essay had been received.  Then it was just a matter of waiting for remarks to come back.

Dr. William Bryant, founder and CEO of BetterRhetoric reviewed the essay and sent detailed remarks for us to examine.  Here are some examples of the remarks we received.  We all felt the remarks were presented in a manner to help improve the paper rather than to tear down the student.

You can find BetterRhetoric on Social Media at the following links:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/collegereadywriting
Twitter: https://twitter.com/collreadywrite
Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/collegereadywriting
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/collegereadywriting

All in all, our family recognizes the importance of writing effectively and correctly.  However, getting to that place is not always easy.  Sometimes it definitely benefits a student to have an outsider critique their work rather than a parent.  I feel BetterRhetoric andthe Premium Package of College-Ready Writing Essentials™ does an excellent job of preparing students for college writing.

Other members of the Home School Review Crew have been writing about the Full Package as well as the Preium Package of College-Ready Writing Essentials™.

Caryl McAdoo has become one of my favorite authors recently.  She writes a story with believable characters, interesting storylines, and wonderful settings.  With living in Texas currently, I appreciate these storylines.

I found Charity and Arlene to be interesting characters who carried out a believable plot.  So if you enjoy historical fiction check out this book for yourself.

About the Author

Caryl McAdooCaryl McAdoo prays her story brings God glory—what she lives to do. Her award-winning, best-selling novels enjoy a lion’s share of 5-Star ratings from Christian readers around the world. With forty-five titles, it’s obvious she loves writing almost as much as singing the new songs the Lord gives her—listen to a few at YouTube. ‘Golden husband Ron shares four children and eighteen grandsugars. The McAdoos live in the woods south of Clarksville, seat of Red River County in far Northeast Texas, waiting expectantly for God to open the next door.

More from Caryl

TEXAS TEARS includes the vote to enter the Union or remain a Republic in 1845. Though it ended in an overwhelming approval to become a state, believe you me, tears fell all over Texas and have been falling since for some.

As a semi-closet secessionist, it wouldn’t bother me if the Texas Legislature voted tomorrow to become the Second Republic of Texas! There are plenty of true radicals living today in the Lone Star State who work diligently daily toward that end!

Anyway, tears also fell in the new Texas community where the four families first met in GONE TO TEXAS—the O’Neals, Van Zandts, Worleys, and Harrells—have been settling in five years. One of their own, Thomas Baldwin (introduced in book two, TEXAS MY TEXAS) represented them in the Texas Congress, going to Washington on the Brazos to vote!

Not all the tears that fell in that growing community were over the vote, but rather a man who came riding in on a magnificent black stallion. Eberhart de Vecchi was tall, handsome, and a perfect Prince Charming who swept the two young coming-of-age women there right off their high-topped shoes!

Friends their whole lives, the older, Charity O’Neal, claimed him right off, but Arlene Van Zandt the younger—only by six months and three days—who’s always given in before isn’t ready to acquiesce so quickly in this instance, smitten as she is.

And so, thar’s trouble in them thar hills! To thicken the sludge, enters the hard-working Landry Humble, Monroe’s (also introduced in book two TEXAS MY TEXAS) nephew. This young man, able to pick more than twice his weight in cotton in a day, knows immediately which lovely he wants.

My, my, my . . . the tears do fall in Texas, and not everyone can have a happy ending. Or can they?

Review and Giveaway for Haven of Rest

Haven of Rest FB Banner About the Book

Book: Haven of Rest

Author: Faith Blum

Genre: Biblical fiction

Release Date: July 26, 2019

Haven of Rest CoverIgnored by her father…

Adah was neglected by her abba and her brother. She must do something. All her previous plans have failed, but she won’t slip up this time. Since her abba is King David, author of many songs, what better way to gain his attention than pulling off a concert featuring twelve of his daughters?

As she plans, Adah’s discontentment grows. She throws herself into the work but worry edges into her heart anyway. Can Adah learn to rest in Adonai as her father? Will she learn contentment in all things?

0001-2253413483

Haven for Rest tells the tale of Adah, the daughter of King David.  Written in a style that pulls the reader into the story, I found it interesting to read.  Let’s face it, we all face discontentment at times.  But finding faith and confidence in God our Father can present challenges.  I found the characters relatable and the story worth reading.

So if you are looking for a story about one of the daughters of King David who is trying to find her place in her father’s heart, check out this book for yourself.

About the Author

Faith BlumFaith Blum is a small-town Wisconsin girl. She has independently published over 25 books in over five years. Most of her books are Christian Historical Fiction with an emphasis on Westerns. During an eBook sale, she was #1 in Christian Westerns and Christian Western Anthologies on Amazon. During that sale, she sold over 3,000 copies.

Faith currently resides in Central Wisconsin with her husband and their cat, Smokey. When not writing, you can find her cooking food from scratch due to food allergies, doing dishes, knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading, or spending time with her husband. She loves to hear from her readers, so feel free to contact her on her website:https://faithblum.com.

More from Faith

The Haven of Rest was inspired by a friend. I wanted another fairy tale to retelling for my series, but had run out of ideas and she mentioned the 12 Dancing Princesses and how they 12 girls could be 12 daughters of King David. It took a little while, but the idea soon grew into this story.

I do take liberties throughout the story. It is a Biblical Fiction story, and I tried hard to keep to those roots and keep it accurate throughout, including for the betrothals and weddings. However, a few liberties I took were:

  • Giving King David more daughters than are mentioned. I did have Tamar be one of the daughters.
  • Creating a backstory for Amnon’s obsession with Tamar.
  • Showing that King David was a flawed man who was not a good father. Although this isn’t stated outright in the Bible, it is definitely implied by the rebellion three of his sons showed and his lax discipline of Amnon after his rape of Tamar.
  • The other liberty I took is a spoiler for the end of the book, so you will have to read the book to find out what that was. I do explain my reasoning of that one in the Historical Note at the end of the book.

I really enjoyed writing this story and hope you enjoy reading it!

Five Minute Friday = Challenge

fmf-round-6-3

Today I am participating again in the Five Minute Friday writing challenge.  Today’s prompt is –  Challenge.   Today I want to talk about the challenge of homeschooling during times of change.  For example, we are a military family, so we often have homeschooled during times of preparing for and then actually moving – sometimes cross states and even halfway across the country.

During some of these times, I have had the challenge of deciding what needs to go with us personally versus what to have the movers pack.  It can be a challenge at times to make sure I have everything we want to take with us in a safe spot from the military movers.  I have heard stories of families even having their garbage packed.  Fortunately, that has not happened to us yet.

So what thing is presenting a challenge to you today?  I would love to hear from you.

If you would like to join in the Five Minute Friday challenge or read what others are writing about this week, click here.

0001-2253413483

Having read all the other books in the Painter Place Saga, I was excited to have the opportunity to review Landmark by Pamela Poole.  This author has the ability to create characters, locations, and settings that bring her stories to life.  I love the incredible amount of details and information she gives.   The emotions she brings to life touch my soul.  Having read about Wyeth as an uncle and established artist in the earlier books and about his wife Christy, I looked forward to getting to know them when they were younger.

This book did not disappoint. The Christian faith demonstrated by the main characters in this story pulled me in along with their values and convictions.  While I knew the charactes from the. earlier books, I loved reading about how they met the people they would eventually marry andhave children with that I read about in the earlier books.

The details and emotions expressed in the pages of this book as well as the earlier ones in the series make me feel I am actually present in the story.  Truly this book and the entire series are books worth reading.  So check out Landmark for yourself.

I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review.

About the Author

Pamela Poole’s Sunflower Hat
Inspiring Southern Ambiance

Pamela Poole’s love for the South inspires all her books and paintings. The setting for her novels and short stories in the Painter Place Saga is a fictional island between Charleston, SC and Myrtle Beach. Pamela lives life loving Jesus and her family as a wife, mother, and GiGi, and she is blessed with true friends. She and her husband Mark currently live in Raleigh, North Carolina, but she considers the Lowcounty of South Carolina “home.” Pamela is a member of various author and artist organizations.

“Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us— to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20,21

More from Pamela

Hi, I’m Pamela Poole, and I live an amazing life as an artist and author! What makes my life amazing isn’t the things I get to do. It’s the scope of experiences, from devasating to incredibly wonderful, that are used by Christ to weave my story and make it one worth telling and living.

Have you ever noticed that people entertain themselves at the expense of the sufferring of others? What about the book you’re currently reading? Would you be interested in the story if the author didn’t drag the characters through excruciating ordeals so they could grow into a better person? We tend to pray for protection from trouble for ourselves and loved ones, then we relish reading or watching others as they cope with it. Their stories are the ones we find amazing. What irony!

In my latest novel, Landmark, I take readers back to the year 1960 to journey with the Painter and Gregoy families as they navigate through trouble on the verge of a tumultuous new decade. Their efforts to do the right things as they walk with Christ will not eliminate the valuable struggle ahead of them. Like other novels in the saga, Landmark is a nostalgic, entertaining, and wholesome story, yet it is packed with meaningful insights that encourage us as we set up our own landmarks to mark the times when Jesus was faithful through our struggles.

Landmark is the first book in the saga chronologically.
