So today, I am kicking off my series for the Home School Review Crew’s Not Back to School Blog Hop. For this series, I will be writing about some of my favorite homeschooling things.
I want to start off by talking about our homeschooling journey. When our oldest son was 10 years old and beginning 5th grade, he attended public school. However, we ran into problems with his teacher. To make a long story short, we wound up pulling him out of public school and homeschooling was our only option.
I was blessed to live in a military community with a large population of amazing homeschooling families. So we began participating in a local homeschool group since our son was very social, plus I felt I would benefit from the interactions as well.
One of the very first things I was told about was “Cathy Duffy’s Top 100 Picks”, a book that has been my constant companion to this day. Although it is now the top 102 picks.
This book includes help for designing a homeschooling mission statement, finding out your teaching style, along with your child(ren)’s learning style. Then it goes into a variety of curriculum choices and also states what type of teacher and learner would benefit from that choice.
Throughout our 13 years (and entering our 14th year) of homeschooling, this book has traveled many miles with me. I have given several copies away and have purchased new editions when they come out.
It is my go-to book for deciding what curriculum choices to use. I also use the website for the book as well. Truly, this book is a resource worth having.
If you homeschool, what are some of your favorite things?

I think some of my favorite things are the fact that there are SO many things! We can use a multitude of different resources to meet the needs of our children. I love this!
