About the Book

Twenty-one-year-old Neka is a bit of an introvert, she also happens to be stunningly beautiful. When she discovers her friend James is about to be dumped, she sees the perfect opportunity to escape from her quiet life. Can she summon the courage to leave it all behind? James Copley comes from a ruthless family. It’s rubbed off. Years ago, he disengaged from his brother’s smear campaign, but now his father has offered him an ultimatum, “Get married or lose your seat at the table.” Plotting to stamp his design on the family business, he proposes to a woman, even though he doesn’t love her. But his carefully laid plans start to unravel when she leaves him on the day she’s due to meet his family. Could years of planning his comeback vanish with her departure? A possible solution comes in an unexpected form: Neka. She’s not only a friend, but the daughter of his benefactor. And she’s right there, offering to support him. But will her support stretch to marriage? He attempts to win her over to his plan but collides with her powerful father who wants to leverage the situation for his own gain. In their fight for survival and love, they are forced to face some uncomfortable truths. Can they overcome thwarted dreams and missed chances to find true love, or does forcing destiny’s hand only lead to misery?

A Gateway to Hope cover

MY THOUGHTS:

Would I be willing to marry someone who did not love me in order for him to inherit money?  Would I want someone to marry me simply to inherit money?  I am unable to answer that question because I married for love.  But I have to say E. C. Jackson does a masterful job of bringing to life the story of an introverted young lady and a man from a wealthy family who must marry to keep his inheritance.

Even in these days and times, I believe parents force their children to marry in order to keep their money or status.  I also believe that these arranged or forced marriages can last if those being married seek God’s Will and direction for their lives.

This is a wonderful debut novel for E. C. Jackson.  The characters draw you in and keep you reading.  The storyline is believable and illustrates the power of God’s Love.  Neka and James embark on a journey to fulfill the demands of James’ father.  But at the same time, Neka’s father (Jame’s mentor)  demonstrates he has ulterior motives of his own.

So if you want to find out how the story turns out, check out this book for yourself.

A Dim Reflection 3D

Back Cover Copy:

William Caverly can’t seem to understand the unsettling feeling that has been nagging him for far too long. Memories of a baby sister are forever haunting his waking hours, and as he sleeps at night, he is repeatedly awakened by nightmares, confusing ones that he’d rather forget. His baby sister died. He saw her little body laid to rest beside their mother. But that doesn’t explain the dim remembrance he has of an event that happened not too long after that.

Charlotte Porter’s days are full and busy as she diligently teaches her young art students at her mother’s boarding school, and tries desperately to stay away from an annoying suitor. Painting has been her passion and dream ever since she could hold a brush, but lately, she has begun to question her mission and calling in life. What is her real purpose? And why does she know so little about her father, who supposedly died before she was born?

William thinks he’s discovered the hidden link that has kept him from his sister for over fifteen years. But then she’s kidnapped, leaving William no choice except to find her and get her back. Once and for all.

MY THOUGHTS (1)

Imagine believing your baby sister had died along with your mother, but then you start having nightmares of things you can not explain.  Add in being a prince, and that adds to the drama and mystery.  This second book in the A Light for Christ series does not disappoint.  William hears the voice of someone he believes is his sister crying for help.   In the meantime, Charlotte is teaching art to young girls who live in her mother’s boarding house.  She misses her father who has died under mysterious circumstances.

Charlotte and William demonstrate a deep faith in God.  I feel the book does an excellent job of showing what a personal relationship with God should look like.  The character development carries the story.  The action and mystery help keep the reader’s interest.  So check this book out for yourself.

Promo for Secrets and Wishes by Kathleen Rouser

SecretsandWishes 500x750 (1)

MY THOUGHTS (1)

Secrets and Wishes is a follow-up to Rumors and Promises and deals with making a fresh start after a spouse has died.  Maggie became a widow when her husband died, leaving her to raise their son alone.  Thomas’s wife has died and he is trying to raise their three sons and daughter alone while trying to build the pharmaceutical business Maggie’s husband left behind.

When Maggie’s son and one of Thomas’ sons clash, it causes friction between the two.  Between illness, a beau from the past, and an epidemic, Thomas and Maggie have to learn to work together and attempt to put their hearts back together while trying to hold together their family and their town.  This historical romance set in 1901 shows the challenges that arise from trying to rebuild lives and make a future.  Kathleen Rouser does an excellent job of conveying historical times.

Secret loves

Secrets and Wishes back cover copy:

Stone Creek, Michigan, April 1901 — Maggie Galloway and Thomas Harper clash after their sons collide in a fistfight. Both widowed, they’re each doing their best as single-parents. Outgoing Maggie has dreams for a home of her own and a business to provide for her son as she searches for God’s path for her life as a widow. Reserved Thomas struggles to establish his new pharmacy and take care of his four rambunctious children while wondering how a loving God could take his beloved wife.

When Thomas becomes deathly ill, Maggie is recruited to nurse him back to health. Taking the children in hand, as well, is more than she bargained for, but she is drawn to help the grieving family. Both nurse and patient find themselves drawn to each other but promptly deny their feelings.

A baking contest sponsored by the Silver Leaf Flour Company brings former beau, Giles Prescott, back into Maggie’s life. When Giles offers Maggie a position at their test kitchen in Chicago, he hints that, along with assuring her a good job, it will allow them to possibly rekindle their relationship.

But then a charlatan comes to town, and tragedy soon follows. Maggie and Thomas discover the miracle potions he hawks aren’t so harmless when an epidemic hits Stone Creek. Thomas and Maggie realize they must work together to save lives.

Maggie finds herself caught up in battles within and without—the battle to help the townsfolk in the midst of illness and chicanery, and the battle to know which man—Thomas or Giles—deserves to win her heart.

Review of Study.com and their DSST and CLEP Test Prep

img_3153

We received a 3-month subscription to Study.com to check out their CLEP and DSST prep materials.  I figured using the preparation materials would be useful even though we are not positive if our son is going to try testing out of courses for college.  The site provides CLEP Practice Tests, DSST Practice Tests, CLEP Study Guide, DSST Study Guide and more.

Study.com provides materials in everything from Language Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Business Courses, Psychology, History, Humanities, and more. They offer products for Middle Schoolers, High Schoolers, and college ranging from popular tests to Teacher Certification, to Nursing and more.

img_3154

The CLEP and DSST materials are ideal for earning college credit.  Students have the option to use the courses as a full study program, an as needed review, or even as a supplement to an additional program (perhaps a homeschool course or even other test prep materials.  Students work at their own pace from either a computer or the mobile App.  For this review, our son used his laptop to work on the materials.

The CLEP materials generally contain about 15 – 20 hours of content.  The goal of the CLEP test materials is to spend about 1.5 hours a week on the contents over three months.  However, some families opt to use the materials only to brush up on their knowledge or may decide to go through the materials at a faster pace.

The CLEP section is the section we decided to concentrate on for this review.  Initially, we were looking at doing either the U.S. History course or the College Algebra Course.  In the end, the College Algebra course was our selection.  Our son began by taking a placement test.  Once the placement test was completed and submitted, we received the results of the test.  These results included Strengths and Weaknesses, which I appreciated.

img_3148

Once the students complete the Placement tests and review the results, they begin working through the actual course materials. Students watch a collection of videos, complete quizzes and chapter tests to improve their grasp of the materials. The students also have the option to retake the placement test to ensure they are making progress. This option also allows students to refine what they need to work on as they progress through the course.

img_3144

We felt the videos were of good quality, but they did not necessarily keep our son’s interest. He tends to do better with an in-person instructor rather than completing lessons on the computer.

As much as I wanted my 18-year-old son to enjoy this program, unfortunately, he found it tedious.  When I watched the placement quiz and the videos, I had to agree with him.  However, I believe the test-taking practice will be invaluable to him in preparation fr college regardless of whether he actually takes any CLEP exams or not. I do believe many families will find this site incredibly useful and worth spending time using.  For those students who love working on the computer and learning from videos, this site offers incredible opportunities with over 4,100 videos.  The ability to retake the quizzes and watch for improvement also impresses me.

You can find Study.com on Social Media on Facebook and Twitter.

So if you are looking for materials to help your students prepare for CLEP Tests or the DSST Tests, check out Study.com and their CLEP and DSST prep materials for yourself.
